Isaac Hayes, 1942-2008

Of course all the Isaac Hayes obituaries are leading with “Theme from ‘Shaft,’ ” the No. 1 song that won Hayes an Oscar and Grammy and became his most famous hit.
And then they mention his performance as Chef in “South Park,” which earned Hayes a whole new generation of fans (many of whom can recite the lyrics to “Chocolate Salty Balls” from memory).
But let’s not forget about Hayes’ other contributions: writer, producer, and — yes — fashion plate.
Through his involvement with Stax Records, the Memphis label that was home to Sam and Dave, Otis Redding, Carla Thomas and Booker T. and the MGs, Hayes — with partner David Porter — created some of the most indelible soul classics: “Soul Man,” “Hold On, I’m Comin’ ” (which, legend has it, was inspired by a bathroom break), “I Thank You.”
He then expanded the genre with his 1969 album “Hot Buttered Soul,” which consisted of four songs — one of them a monumental 18-minute version of Jimmy Webb’s “By the Time I Get to Phoenix.” “With the release of this album, Motown suddenly seemed manufactured and James Brown a bit too theatrical,” writes Allmusic.com’s Jason Birchmeier.
And the Hayes look? Unforgettable: proudly bald, heavily jeweled, wearing flowing outfits befitting an African king. “It was almost as if he was made to be a musical god,” writes The Associated Press’ Nekesa Mumbi Moody.
We can dig it.

ABE VIGODA @ THE Smell

Tonight's line-up at the Smell is nothing short of an east-meets-west indie event. Making their way from NYC, the Urxed feature Rob Barber, one half of Brooklyn-based tribal psychedelic duo High Places, while Soft Circle harnesses the talents of former Lightning Bolt and Black Dice member Hisham Bharoocha. The other half of the bill, meanwhile, is all LA. Rockers Abe Vigoda are the latest band from the Smell scene to be anointed by Pitchfork, while electronics fiend Lucky Dragons (aka Providence scene vet Luke Fischbeck) recently earned himself a spot in this year's Whitney Biennial with a series of mesmerizing performance pieces.

PIERRE REEDER / MICHAEL RUNYUN @ Echo

Pierre de Reeder
On the pop-folk ditty, de Reeder pairs acoustic plucks with a bright lead and lush harmonies on a timeless pop melody, instantly affirming his membership in the noteworthy-side-project club already frequented by his bandmates. Rich layers of “hey, hey, hey” and “ha, ha, ha” reach great heights and shimmer before the song’s guitar solo playfully hijacks the middle section. By handling nearly all of the album’s instrumentation, de Reeder proves why he’s such an asset to Rilo, but by writing a song the caliber of “Never Thought,” he successfully stands alone. - Spin.com

Or, the Whale w/ Idaho Falls, Leslie & the Badgers, and Caleb Nichols @ Echo

Or, the Whale
A reference to Moby Dick and a testament to the roots of what making music is all about, San Francisco seven-piece Or, the Whale, is kicking up dust along the West Coast and spreading the gospel of honest music. Writing songs with a country heart and a scope that encompasses the entire country, Or, the Whale’s sound embodies a friendly front-porch gathering, a rollicking jubilee, and a painful lament. From gospel to roots, Or, the Whale’s songs preserve a warm, organic feeling that transcends age and musical disposition.
- Performer Mag
All it takes to fall for Or, the Whale is one listen to the harmonized chorus of "Call and Response," but the San Francisco septet has a lot more to offer than catchy climaxes. The group combines alt-folk, country, and rock influences with lyrical substance, which is only natural considering the band's name is taken from the subtitle to Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. Inspirational, political, and inclusive, Or, the Whale's sound swarms from all directions: the slide guitar chokes you up, xylophone hits brighten a dark room, and drums keep things moving like a victory march. Playing supporting roles tonight are the Idaho Falls, Caleb Nichols and the dusty, sweet road house love songs of Leslie & the Badgers. – Phil Kropoth

When great sounds come your way, you share! I thought I’d pass along the nasty, new mixtape from Pants Off. It’s a delicious mix of disco, house and bangers. If you missed his sets with Bloc Party or Hercules and Love Affair be sure to check him out at the Barker Block (www.myspace.com/filtersunsetseries) on 8/14, 8/28 and 9/11.
And coming soon, Four on the Floor at the Mountain Bar.As an extra special treat, the mix kicks off with the new track from The Laughing Light of Plenty!

Three live music stages provide much of the energy, where local heroes like Mike Watt, Extra Fancy and Candye Kane perform back-to-back sets. Midway rides and an open-air disco add to the fun. Of course vendors are in on the action, with more than 200 booths offering everything from tamales to Greenpeace literature.
