Hotbed: Video Cultivation beside the Getty Gardens

Admission: Free; no reservations required.
Projected onto the exterior walls of the Getty Center, 18 artists' videos from 1984 to 2007 explore the theme of the body as nature or culture. This special two-evening installation complements the exhibition California Video and is curated by Anne Bray, Director of Freewaves, a Los Angeles-based arts organization connecting new media from around the world. The videos are arranged thematically and play in a loop starting and ending at the tram arrival plaza, with a fulcrum at the Museum Courtyard.

An internationally renowned drummer, Ralph Penland is a contemporary innovator creating a fusion of jazz, pop, rock, and R&B. He has played around the world with an impressive variety of artists including Herbie Hancock, Freddie Hubbard, Nancy Wilson, Stan Getz, Etta James, and Carlos Santana.

This DJ'd, open-bar launch party offers a first look at the BBB's colorful, simply-drawn t-shirts, most of which're doodled by the young members of the band The Kids of Widney High -- developmentally disabled youths who, despite their infirmities, are still involved in two creative projects to your zero.

Sweet-sounding folk-pop ensemble the Parson Red Heads have come a long way since moving from Eugene, Oregon to Los Angeles last summer. Their debut LP, King Giraffe, crawled up college-radio charts and onto the KCRW playlist, paving the way for a new six-song EP, Owl & Timber, to be released this month. But their greatest marker of success (and relief) is that all six band members are no longer stuffed into a tiny one-bedroom apartment. Tonight, they celebrate their rising star and new EP at Spaceland, alongside the Movies, My Pet Saddle, and the Monahans. – Jessica Jardine
