CinéMOCA
MOCA dishes out some summer loving with a brand-new project: CinéMOCA, a six-week, Saturday-night outdoor series celebrating film, music, and after-hours art appreciation at the museum's Little Tokyo location, the Geffen Contemporary. Tonight's series opener features an exclusive screening of Underground Forces, a two-hour docu-tribute to artist Joe Rees' visionary video-production studio, Target Video. Back before MTV killed the radio star, Rees and Target were filming memorable footage of the late punk era's baddest acts: Bauhaus, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, the Ramones, the Germs, the Weirdos, and more. Appropriately, Henry Rollins plays a DJ set before the screening. – Julian Hooper

FROG EYES live tonight at The Echo
Drawing inspiration from Dante, Shakespeare and the paintings of Brueghel, Frog Eyes’ Carey Mercer has cast himself as a kind of raving academic, gone batty from too much time cooped up in the ivory tower. Most often, he sings of the very building blocks of civilization, from industry and commerce to little birds and houses in the woods. Yes, conspicuously couching one’s work in the classics is an ambitious and professorial stance, but Mercer has always been up to the task; he howls — and pants, whoops, shrieks, barks, et cetera — like a feverish lecturer behind a guitar instead of behind a podium. And while Mercer’s antics, on record and in concert, are impossible to ignore, Frog Eyes has always backed it up musically with a wildly imaginative, deeply dramatic sonic language all its own. But on Tears of the Valedictorian, the band’s fourth album, Frog Eyes rises to a new level, framing Mercer’s ranting in a more expansive and lavish sound. - Prefix Mag

THAILAND

Tonight, art gallery and east-side talent magnet Echo Curio hosts a gathering of new bands. The evening starts with a dose of Southern alt-rock from Long Beach natives the Satellite Dogs. They're chased off the stage by the Miles Approach — though the night's highlight comes from LA locals Stab City. Their booze-induced adrenaline rock busts up an otherwise sophisticated evening, as their guitarist prances around the stage like a cross between Prince and Rage Against the Machine's Tom Morello. Headliners Badguise play cerebral prog-punk to top off the evening. – Jorge Barriere

VISIONARY HOLLYWOOD
Erik Davis' mindblowing lectures are enlightening adventures to begin with — but put him on a luxury bus headed for five of Hollywood's best mystical historic sites and things get positively rapturous. Co-sponsored by Arthur magazine and inspired by Davis' recent book The Visionary State, the bus tour hits Manley P. Hall's Philosophical Research Society to explore its library with author and librarian Maja D'Aoust; the Vendanta Society of Southern California, Aldous Huxley's old haunt; and the Aetherius Society, a center for cosmic consciousness and healing founded in the mid-'50s by UFO contactee Dr. George King. – Steve Nalepa

Bootie LA has kept the party pumping for three years, and marks the occasion tonight with a live set by Smash-Up Derby and plenty of bastard-pop mashups from resident DJs. The endless possibilities of your favorite pop songs set against your favorite hip-hop, R&B, or electronica songs (M.I.A. vs the Cure... aaaand here comes Jay-Z!) guarantees you'll never get off the dance floor. Bootie strongly encourages early arrival — the first 300 Jack Sparrow groupies get free Bootie-anniversary CDs. – Annie Lo
