Germany blitz into semi-finals

Germany beat Portugal 3-2 in Basle to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2008. A flowing German move saw the recalled Bastian Schweinsteiger poke home for the first, before Bayern team-mate Miroslav Klose netted with a header five minutes later. Nuno Gomes gave Portugal a ray of hope, but captain Michael Ballack headed the third. Sub Helder Postiga made the final few minutes interesting, but to no avail…

Sea Wolf live at Echoplex
Like other sentimental acts before him, Sea Wolf mastermind Alex Church mixes earnest acoustic melodies with a pinch of woe. Thankfully, his lyrical wit (not to mention his band's string-heavy instrumentals and catchy fills) wrenches him free from the fetters of irredeemably melancholic indie-folk. And, clearly, he can still take a joke; his MySpace page lists Wolf Eyes, Wolf Parade, We Are Wolves, etc. as his sole influences. Following the release of college-radio favorite Leaves in the River, Sea Wolf hit their hometown tonight, reminding us that that a little bittersweet reflection never hurt anyone — at least not for long. – Rachel Brodsky

THE AIRBORNE TOXIC EVENT - Gasoline - acoustic

While it was only April since the last Gathering of the Pretzel, it has seemed like an eternity. People have been restless. We saw two cars collide at an intersection today downtown for no reason -- although it's pretty obvious that both drivers were pretzel deprived as emergency personnel put them immediately on an IV Wetzels cocktail drip.
For our third "Rock with a Twist", CGT and we are presenting The Flying Tourbillon Orchestra, Jack Wilson, Jr. (featuring members of The Natural Disasters and The Devils Romantics/Red Maids), Downtown/Union and our hosts and makers of the pretzels, The Monolators. This lineup just wreaks of one of those "good friends/good times" vibes as all these bands are BFF'ers. Moreover, we are certain you will not find a more pleasant purlieu for pretzel polyphagists than All Star Lanes.
And, yes, some sort of pretzel buttons will be made for this show.

Earth live at The Echo
Earth’s “Miami Morning Coming Down II (Shine)” is a steady, sedate, chiming march, a primary-colored burst of guitars, organs, drums. For a man whose scuzzy, Melvins-mainlined Earth 2 remains the document for drone-and doom-minded depressives– some of whom actually named their bands after Earth songs/guitar equipment– Dylan Carlson’s return as the Ennio Morricone of metal continues to confound. The band that borrowed their name from Sabbath’s earliest, nuclear-paranoid incarnation have become optimists, purveyors of uplift. Where Earth once pounded chords flat, the newly reconfigured quartet pulls them out like taffy. “Miami Morning Coming Down” nods at Johnny Cash, spaghetti twang, gospel hymns; even Carlson’s newest title, The Bees Made Honey in the Lion’s Skull, turns his band’s fearsome reputation inside out, offering up metal’s ubiquitous skull as the birthplace of something sweet. - Pitchfork
