Drop Dead Gorgeous feat. Darker My Love
w/ DJ Pube$ and the Juan Maclean
Natural History Museum

The Juan Maclean, Darker My Love and a roster of amazing local DJ talent, including Holy Ghost and DJ Pube$, get a little bit spooky, a little bit prehistoric at the Natural History Museum for a Halloween party presented by Metromix, Indie 103.1, Bud Light Lime and our friends at MFG Productions, the folks behind your favorite Dance Right parties.
If you long for summer's packed and delightful First Fridays at the museum, then this is your Halloween. With marble halls filled with creepy animals to check out—plus some of our favorite bands and DJs—we'd be so at this even if we weren't the ones throwing it. Start getting your costume together and RSVP, because this is going to be good.
To RSVP, email metromix@danceright.net with the number of guests in your party. Confirmed guests will receive an email with more info before the party.

These fine fiends shove a creepy rock show so far down your throat you'll wish you'd have brought your dead grandma!
From the new gutter of Los Angeles, they wake… armed with an all guitar reckless buzzing abandon, straight from the order of old school garage scare-o-billy, think Cramps, Gun Club, Hasil Adkins, The Milkshakes all crammed into a pickle and deep fat fried. Mmm, put some blood on that!
Four young lads with brain damage are complimented and hollowed out with the fabulously talented, Go-Go Ghouls - dancing, singing, slapping, and holding the highly coveted, "Rope of Donuts," for your pleasure at every show.
*(Eat a donut off the rope without usin' yer hands and you win a free kick in the ass!)
What shameful things happen at only one show in Los Angeles? Terror, Suspense, Guitars, Donuts!
THIS SHOW WILL ETCH ITSELF INTO YOUR MIND WITH SHOCK AFTER NAKED SHOCK!

Very Be Careful bring cumbia and vallenato into the 21st century. The Caribbean-by-way-of-LA group expound upon urban grit with jubilant music that resounds as much with Colombian lustre as with the grime of their current locale. Taking the acoustic guitar, accordion and double bass of their traditional sounds and adding blazing percussion and bass lines, the group provoke dance-floor mayhem — inspiring what the trainer-melting, party-keen collective call a "booty-shakin' firestorm". Tonight they get support from DJ Randy J, the Leatherette, and other surprise treats.

Bound to be one of the underdog parties this All Hallows Eve, Halloween Downtown's rock showcase features local rock veterans the Vacation and headliners the Ringers, who bring the headlocks and high kicks, while CMJ favorites Rumspringa are sure to dissuade you from party-hopping. The party also promises a special "dead" carpet that's perfect for snapping a new profile pic and spooky specialty drinks. And for those who feel the need to get a glimpse of the moon, revelers can boogie outdoors to DJs Tuna vs Pia, Kid Astro, Broken Knows, and Mahssa.

Friday night I went To Mr T's Bowl here in Highland Park. The evening was off to a great start. I got Blizzy away long enough to go fishing for a while. Mr. T's was pretty crowded. Lots of bands. When Pu$y Cow came on it was pure Awesomeness! Cowboy hats and all. This band puts on a great show. Super hi energy. There was even a mosh situation. Which is always fascinating. While it looks like great fun, I don't dare enter. A girl could lose her cocktail in the pit. Pu$y Cow is loads of fun. Intense yet inviting. The audience ate it up. It was a grand old time indeed. Joe on vocals, is quite the show stealer. I had a beer with him afterwards and he was very charming. An absolute delight. They will be playing on Halloween at The Blue Star in LA with Bobot Adrenaline, which is one of my favorites, and you know I don't play favorites with my bands. It should be a good show.
Slowly, the evening came to an end. With a heavy hear i bid the bartender farewell. Manny was his name. I will never forget him....or Pu$y-Cow. Another excellent night in my city and you missed it.
Have yourself a Happy Little Halloween...then wash it down with a giant martini.
Cheers,
Barfly

With "The Fire Is Waiting", the band finally gets to cut loose with a full-on 11-minute blow-out full of Godzilla-sized riffs and quiet interludes. The song's length, especially as it transitions to otherworldly hums and drones, provides the perfect opportunity to ruminate: sure, it's grandiose, but is it pompous? Do Secret Machines cross that line? Well, yeah, probably, they do. With its apocalyptic portent, Secret Machines demands to be taken seriously. But at least the music-- ambitious, scary, inspiring, rousing-- matches the sentiment. Secret Machines are serious about what they do, and until more bands find ways to balance pop, prog, and booming hard rock as well as the Machines do on "Last Believer, Drop Dead", that pomposity can be forgiven as just part of the whole package.

AFI Fest
Arclight

The AFI Fest continues its yearly assault on the Arclight with a truly impressive lineup for 2008. Among the highlights are opening-night presentation The Soloist, Joe Wright's story of a homeless musician (Jamie Foxx) trying to find his former classical glory on the streets of LA; closing-night selection Defiance, writer/director Edward Zwick's tale of nature vs Nazis; and the highly anticipated centerpiece, Che, Steven Soderbergh's tribute to the Cuban revolutionary. Other must-sees include The Wrestler, Darren Aronofsky's made-for-Mickey Rourke vehicle about a former professional grappler's return to the ring, and F. Javier Gutierrez's Before the Fall (3 Dias), a devastating sci-fi boiler that imagines the world's last 72 hours through the eyes of a Spanish family, following the news that a meteorite is about to collide with Earth.

Will new WB webisode series 'Rockville, CA' officially ruin Echo Park forever?

If you've ever made the Logan's Run of bars, clubs and cafes on Sunset Boulevard between Alvarado Street and Elysian Park Avenue, and thought it would make for a fine television show, you are hereby deemed hopeless and should be exiled to Brentwood. However, you also are prescient. Such a show is about to become the fictional "The Hills" of Echo Park (don't act like you're somehow above it, you be-moustached kids), and good lord, do they have their ducks in a row on guest appearances. - Pop & Hiss - The L.A. Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!

BRING CANDLES

Chilean-born and California-bred, Pilar Díaz is a talented singer-songwriter whose life highlights her many interests. Moving frequently between Santiago and LA as a child, she was taught guitar by her parents, both of whom were acclaimed folkloric musicians, and her voice was soon heard on various cartoons in her native and newfound countries. Accurately reflecting her adopted hometown of Los Angeles, she spent her teenage years going to punk shows in Hollywood, and her bedroom walls had as many photos of Victor Jara and Violeta Parra as they did REM and Bjork.
She graduated from CalArts, where she majored in classical voice (specifically opera), was a member of a Bulgarian women's choir and Balkan music group, participated in a gamelan ensemble that toured Bali, and led a popular campus band with Ryan Francesconi, who currently serves as Joanna Newsom's musical director. During and after college, Díaz worked with Danny Elfman on numerous soundtracks, and her vocals appear in films like Spiderman and Sleepy Hollow. With her rock band Los Abandoned, a bilingual new wave outfit whose debut album was lauded everywhere from the LA Times to Perez Hilton, she performed on Conan O'Brien and KCRW, gigged with Sonic Youth and Neil Young, and played before a crowd of 40,000 in Mexico City.
Díaz has now chosen to go solo, working on new songs and exploring new songwriting partnerships. She aims to continue the hybridity of her life experiences and wide artistic tastes, while increasing the personal nature of her songwriting and maintaining her vibrant and unique stage performances.

Cult animator and Academy Award nominee Don Hertzfeldt ("the Meaning of Life", "Rejected", "Billy's Balloon") is hitting the road this fall for a rare series of one-night-only events! A selection of Don's classic animated shorts return to the big screen, culminating in the exclusive regional premiere of his brand new film, "I am so proud of you". His longest piece to date, "I am so proud of you" is the eagerly anticipated second chapter to "Everything will be OK", winner of the Sundance Film Festival's Jury Award in Short Filmmaking and named by many critics as one of the "best films of 2007". Every screening will be immediately followed by a live on-stage interview and audience Q+A with Don Hertzfeldt.
