Kenan Bell [Listen] [Watch]
Kenan Bell, who was impressive at his release show back in March but still would be considered a work in progress, has seemingly exploded overnight with a band of familiar faces (Monsters Are Waiting, Dynamite Walls, and on this night Josh Klinghoffer and John Frusciante). Spaceland must have been pleased to see the band draw such a good midnight crowd — they’re scheduled to be the resident band in October.

Pinback [Listen] [Watch]
San Diegan quintet Pinback eschew a single style in order to create their refreshingly earnest brand of melodic indie rock. Mixing drum machines and crackling electronics with distinctly British post-punk bass lines, emotionally fraught vocals, and slow-burning textures reminiscent of Yo La Tengo, the band remains constant in its obsessive focus on songcraft and structure. The care the group shows for its sound is immediately apparent, enough so that even if you haven't heard Pinback's music before, you may find yourself humming along.
– Giles Cottle
Album four from San Diego indie-pop collective Pinback brims with more box-ticking excellence than its immediate predecessor, Summer In Abaddon. Whereas the band’s 2004 long-player was a studied exercise in melancholic understatement, melded to some mightily addictive pop hooks, this ten-tracker is an immediately gratifying affair that pulls not a single punch in the catchiness stakes.
Opener and lead single ‘From Nothing To Nowhere’ is a statement of intent: confident, it bolts from the blocks to deliver a vocal within five seconds. There’s little in the way of slow-release here; few songs that take many a repeat listen to worm their way beneath the skin. Pinback have mastered their craft and, in a manner akin to The Shins, are now able to deliver with faultless magnificence within their field. Sure, their take on pop-rock is a few awkward timings short of compositional rocket science, but by working within the familiar – the acceptable aural face of contemporary indie – Pinback have developed to a zenith position. Autumn Of The Seraphs is, almost without doubt, their strongest collection to date.

Rademacher [Watch]
Exhibit A is a non-album demo exclusive, “What Happened to Yr Friends,” that displays Rademacher’s breadth as they craft a truly earnest and epic track. Meanwhile, Stunts sample “If U Got Some Magic” displays an astute wit when asking, “If you know the city, then why can’t you find a place to get your hair cut?” Notice the growth without surrender. In both tracks, what’s clear is the consistency with which the expertly slack songs stay gritty without sacrificing tune or tightness. Poppy without being overly perky, these Cali boys aren’t all sunshine — check the almost-Arcade Fire apocalyptic piano slams on “Magic” or the echo and feedback haunting “Friends.” Still, the hooks and melodies catch unexpectedly, like walking into that near-invisible spider web, as frontman Malcolm Sosa’s tender falsetto harmonies creep up from behind during the frailest moments of “Friends.” - Spin.com

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
¡¡¡ MARK YOUR CALENDARS !!!

Hi everybody,
As most of you know, I play keyboards in a band called Light FM. This past year we worked our asses off to self-produce our full-length album, Black Magic Marker. Tuesday night (tomorrow) is our official CD Release show at Boardner's in Hollywood. The cover is 6 bucks (all door money goes to the bands) and Dewars is doing a 3 dollar drink promotion. We'll also have cd's and tshirts and some cool stuff to give away.
This is the biggest show of the year for us-- so if you CAN make it, this is the one baby. We go on at 11pm.
And to everyone who has come to shows in the past year or so, thanks homies. It really means a lot to me.
Hope to see you there,
xoxo- Kim
