DUB CLUB with EARL ZERO

Earl Zero - backed by the Jubilee Orchestramixed by Scientist inna dubwise fashion
Veteran roots-reggae chanter Earl Zero brings both an impressive catalog of classic mid-1970s reggae classics (”None Shall Escape the Judgment,” “Shackles & Chains,” “Righteous Works”) and an insanely deep, fated personal pedigree. Born and raised in Kingston’s Greenwich Town, he grew up alongside close childhood friend Earl “Chinna” Smith — one of reggae’s most potent ax men — and, between the dozen or so Greenwich Sound Systems, a burgeoning Rastafarian faith and a natural gift for spiritually provocative music, Zero came to perfectly represent the abiding, quietly revolutionary stance of the Jamaican Rasta. In fact, Zero’s serene dignity led him to a particularly notable sideline, after Bob Marley personally selected the youth to serve as his herbsman, which entailed chopping and blending the ideal mixture of ganja to best serve the superstar’s head. Tonight, Zero will be working with a full, live band, and, with the King Tubby–groomed dub genius Scientist at the controls, it’s a damn near-perfect proposition. - LA Weekly

Hearts of Palm UK w/ Fol Chen, and the Sweet Hurt
El Cid
It's a bubblegum-and-backbeat free-for-all at El Cid tonight, featuring a triple bill of LA indie outfits with a shared enthusiasm for sugar and spikes. New-wave electropop headliners Hearts of Palm UK (who celebrate the release of their new CD tonight) may be the mellowest band ever to get Indie 103.1 airplay. Openers and fellow locals the Sweet Hurt add a contemplative, folksy edge, while Fol Chen offers a heavier, more theatrical variety of pop lament, and interstitial DJ sets from happy-go-lucky spinneristas the Squaregirls keep the evening humming. – Shana Nys Dambrot
OBI BEST
“When she’s not moonlighting as back-up singer for acclaimed retro-pop group the Bird and the Bee , Alex Lilly is masterminding the fanciful pop of Obi Best. Ranging from melodic and ethereal to rollicking and fun, their music inhabits a universe where fantasy and reality live side by side; here, Tokyo lies just around the block from Stockholm, youth and wisdom hold hands, magic seems to grow on trees.” – Social Science
“We've been anxious to hook up with Obi Best since stumbling across one of their shows last year. They're just a fantastic band that will remind you of all the things you love about Swede pop, 60's grooves, and Minty Fresh records. Plus their video for "Nothing Can Come Between Us" just kills.” - LA Underground

The Rumble Strips [Listen] [Watch]
Failed romantics the Rumble Strips have taken the UK by storm with the Jens Lekman-style tune "Girls and Boys in Love," the verbose Belle and Sebastian rumination "Cowboy," and even a Thin Lizzy cover. On the band's debut, Girls and Weather, singer Charlie Waller's whimpers, whines, and poetic witticisms are hedged by the neat drum beats of Matthew Wheeler, as well as some soulful sax and quirky acoustic guitar. Share some tea and sympathy tonight as the neurotic Brits — who have finally resolved the visa issues that kept them away for quite awhile — hit Spaceland. – Sabrina Jaszi
The Rumble Strips’ music sounds lifted from an era when seven-inch singles were the norm and post-punk British bands approximated old soul records using a limited skill set. Those R&B-inspired rock tunes sounded just wrong enough to emerge as something new and very right.Singer-songwriter Charlie Waller evokes the passionate yowl of XTC’s Andy Partridge and Dexys Midnight Runners’ Kevin Rowland, and he sings of the usual stuff: Girls and Weather, as The Rumble Strips’ debut CD title indicates. As Waller fights the urge to join the rat race with the aid of a manically strummed guitar, sax-and-trumpet blasts animatedly back up his decision to lay low. If the English band sounds slightly tipsy, that may well be because it is. Raw skills, however, can’t hide the witty, warm and inviting soul in The Rumble Strips’ songs. - NPR

The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.
While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
