Robyn [Listen] [Watch]
Looking like David Bowie’s little sister, Swedish starlet Robyn entered the arena in 1997 with “Show Me Love,” a generic dance-pop smash co-produced by hitmaker/Britney Spears sculptor Max Martin. But sensing a future of head-shaving and How I Met Your Mother cameos, Robyn jumped ship to start her own label and work with some of her edgier homeys: electro-goth oddballs the Knife and freaky club fusionist Teddybears.
The result, released in Sweden in 2005 and now available in a virtually identical version here, is a shiny mainstream pop record with enough wit and weirdness to impress even jaded bloggers. YouTube fave “Konichiwa Bitches” nods to Missy Elliott, Eminem and a classic Chappelle’s Show skit over hand claps and Eighties-style synth drums; it’s such nasty fun that her dubious rap skills don’t detract a bit. “Bionic Woman” quotes art-pop grand dame Laurie Anderson, while “Crash and Burn Girl” bites Buffalo Springfieldís “For What It’s Worth” over fat party beats. Sexy without being pandering, arty without being pretentious, Robyn is a public service: a record that can make indie-minded geeks dance without shame. -Rolling Stone
plus: DJs Dia, Jennifer, and Solid Todd spinning rock, indie, punk, electro alternative. No Cover after Midnight.

The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.
While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO
DUB CLUB with TIPPA IRIE

Tippa Irie [Listen] [Watch]
Anthony Henry - a.k.a. “Tippa Irie” - emerged from England’s Saxon Sound International - the star-studded travelling sound system that has been at the forefront of the U.K. reggae dancehall scene for the past 25 years and helped launch the careers of artists such as Maxi Priest, Papa Levi and Smiley Culture. Tippa Irie was part of the new generation of British MC’s who developed the ‘Fast Talking’ style chat which today can be heard in modern day rappers like Busta Rhymes.
Tippa Irie has produced fifteen albums to date and has a string of ..1 hit songs to his credit including “Hello Darling”, “Raggamuffin Girl” (featuring Peter Hunnigale), “Stress” (featuring Lloyd Brown), “Superwoman” (featuring Winsome), “Baby I’ve Been Missing You” (featuring Janet Lee Davis) and “Shouting for the Gunners”–a song originally recorded for the Arsenal Football Team which reached the Top 30 status on the British pop charts.
To this day, Tippa Irie remains one of the most requested Reggae entertainers internationally. The surviving members of Sublime made sure their Long Beach Dub All Stars debut for Dreamworks Records had the necessary dancehall credentials by commissioning Tippa Irie to contribute “Sensi” on their ‘Right Back’(1999) CD and be their special guest on their subsequent North American tour. In 2000 he was invited to support UB40 on their sold-out Labour of Love III UK tour. Later Tippa was called back in the studio with Long Beach Dub All Stars to record “Life Goes On” featuring Half Pint and Jurassic Five’s Charli2na on LBDA’s ‘Wonders of the World’(2001) CD for Dreamworks Records. Impressed with Tippa’s rapid-fire lyrical arsensal, Jurassic Five asked Tippa to record together and the end result was a wicked Tippa and Charli2na combination entitled “The Struggle”. The rap world took notice and soon enough Tippa was once again summoned to record with some of the music industry’s biggest stars. Most recently Tippa was nominated for a Grammy in the Best Rap Song category for his collaboration with Black Eyed Pea’s Will-I-Am on “Hey Mama”, a track featured on the international chartbusting ‘Elephunk’(2004) CD on A&M/Interscope Records.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
