Heartless Bastards [Listen] [Watch] [MP3]
Last night at the Southgate House in Newport, the “new look” Bastards returned home and the transition was nothing short of seamless. Nothing against Lamping and Vaughn, who are well respected and talented musicians in their own right, but HB has always been about Erika. So after a quick “it feels good to be home” from Wennestrom, the band ripped into their set and as usual, I found myself concentrating on Erika and her signature croon. With a voice that has drawn in fans like Lucinda Williams, it is hard not to. And that was not the only thing about the show that seemed familiar. Southgate House was smoky and full, with plenty of beer cans being quickly disposed of, the band behind Erika, while not quite as tight as the last incarnation just yet, did a more than adequate job and not only has Erika’s voice not skipped a beat, but neither has her lack of stage banter, which is still sorta endearing if you asked me.
We were also treated to several new songs in the set, which are rumored to all be a part of the new Heartless Bastards album, The Mountain, which is due out in January from Fat Possum. At the end of the night as I headed home I could not help but think that in more ways than one, the more things change, the more they stay the same…. - Each Note Secure

Apes & Androids [Listen] [Watch]
A dance floor-ready cocktail of Queen’s bombast (complete with Freddie Mercury’s falsetto), 1980s Prince, Ziggy Stardust-era Bowie and Beck’s Midnight Vultures. On their debut album Blood Moon, A&A pump out sing-alongs like “Hot Kathy,” party starters like “We Don’t Understand You” and simmering burners like “Riverside.” “We tried to build the record into something that would be a journey when listening to the whole thing,” says A&A’s Brian Jacobs, who shares vocal and guitar duties with bandmate David Tobias. The band’s live performances are becoming as well-known as the songs themselves, with cheerleaders, giant silver skulls, face paint and even a Korean drum circle all making appearances for a unique live experience.- Rolling Stone
Apes and Androids arrive like a silly, electro-psych trip through a parallel universe where Danny Elfman and Robert Moog are the same person. This lesser-known Brooklyn sextet is a daub of glitter on the indie-rock scene, catching eyes across the country with their offbeat live show. This week, the band is poised to bring its stage tomfoolery to the east side with shows at both Spaceland and the Echo. – Jorge Barriere

To celebrate the launch of his digital label, Brainfeeder, LA-based producer Flying Lotus has put together a roster of top-notch signees and friends, all converging at Echoplex tonight. The future-hop auteur has garnered numerous comparisons to the late, great J Dilla for the laid-back, left-coast cool of his latest record, Los Angeles. Gaslamp Killer, whose wild beard makes it seem like he could live up to his creepy moniker, produces heady, epic hip-hop beats, and his sets see him seamlessly shifting from Portishead to Trick Daddy. Londoner Kode9, whose dready bass lines pull even the most discerning listeners out from underneath their hoodies, also throws down, alongside Martyn, Samiyam, Hudson Mohawke, and Ras_G.

In its decade of existence, Firecracker has set the pace for underground parties in Los Angeles. Tonight, manning the decks with some of the best in underground hip-hop, abstract beats, and rare grooves, the party founders are pulling out all the stops in honor of the big 10. Since hip-hop's earliest days, Harlem-born Biz Markie has also been setting the pace; to help spur the celebrations, the clown prince of rap pleases with his classic cuts, distinctive voice, and hilarious antics. Also in the mix: Tittsworth, the man credited with bringing Baltimore booty to the hipster blogerati.

Will new WB webisode series 'Rockville, CA' officially ruin Echo Park forever?

If you've ever made the Logan's Run of bars, clubs and cafes on Sunset Boulevard between Alvarado Street and Elysian Park Avenue, and thought it would make for a fine television show, you are hereby deemed hopeless and should be exiled to Brentwood. However, you also are prescient. Such a show is about to become the fictional "The Hills" of Echo Park (don't act like you're somehow above it, you be-moustached kids), and good lord, do they have their ducks in a row on guest appearances. - Pop & Hiss - The L.A. Times music blog

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
