Human Resources
The Company

The economy be damned: amid a spate of gallery closings, it's still full speed ahead for the fearless founders of the Company, Annie Wharton and Anat Ebgi, as they inaugurate their new exhibition and performance space. Featuring a small crew of multimedia artists from NYC and elsewhere, Human Resources evinces an extreme fascination with human behavioral patterns. Tonight's opening inaugurates the new digs, kicking off a planned series of shows, talks, and events at Chinatown's Moytel, a hybrid hotel style residence for Chinese ex-pats.
Note:
There will be a gallery talk with artist Chris Verene prior to the November 22 opening reception at 5pm. Please RSVP to info@thecompanyart.com.

O’DEATH / LE SWITCH / DEATH TO ANDERS
Spaceland

O’Death is a pack of humble Brooklyn scruffs who raise the dead with haunted Appalachian punk and go by the handles of Greg Jamie (vocals/guitar), Gabe Darling (vocals/ ukulele/guitar/banjo/ piano), David Rogers-Berry (drums), Bob Pycior (fiddle/guitar/piano), Jesse Newman (bass), and Dan Sager (trombone/ euphonium/keys). Their self-released debut, Head Home, is 15 tracks of heartfelt, full-moon delivery.
This is the sound of the Pogues madly slurping mothers’ milk and brothers’ blood at Gettysburg — banjo and fiddle ballads turned berserker by Greg Jamie’s bullfrog bleat. But don’t mistake O’Death for preservationists. The high-lonesomes of Bill Monroe and Bonnie Billy may be unmistakable in their arsenal, but these bushy-faced boys are a reincarnated cavalry charge, and they’ll be damned if they take the hill the same way twice. - SPIN

Peanut Butter Wolf presents
Violet Valen: The Buddy Collection:
Grandma's Buttons
Downtown Art Center Gallery

Named "Buddy" in honor of a particularly beloved teddy bear, Violet Valen's line of hand-crafted hoodies is about as hardcore as pretty clothing can get. More Tank Girl than Gap, her garments flaunt and flounce their shredded lace and post-industrial patchworks, adding a feminine edge to the look of the urban punk princess. Valen's creations have caught the eye of many admirers, not least among them Stones Throw don Peanut Butter Wolf and Banana Split's Mike B, who lend tonight's line-debut party enough beats and rare grooves to turn the room into a catwalk.

RSVP required, as capacity is limited; please email buddybyviolet@gmail.com.

Barragan's mixes it up for Echo Park hipsters

It's Wednesday night at Barragan's and, as usual, packs of twentysomethings jam into the shoebox-sized bar, the dark-paneled restaurant booths, the upstairs banquet room and rooftop patio. They shout to be heard over the throbbing sounds coming from a D.J. spinning records as weary waitresses and bus boys bring free nachos. But the big draw at this Echo Park Mexican restaurant on Wednesday is not the music or the food. It's the $2.50 margaritas. On a good "Margarita Wednesday" the restaurant pours about 1,500 drinks... MOCA Possibly Seeking Bailout from LACMA

After news of MOCA's extreme financial situation, Culture Monster at the LA Times is hearing that MOCA will possibly "approach the Los Angeles County Museum of Art about a merger, which will effectively mean a transfer of MOCA's extraordinary collection to the Mid-Wilshire complex." Another art blogger believes LACMA would be more than willing to say "yes" to the offer. - LAist
Help the Fire Victims

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is encouraging residents and businesses to help support the hundreds of displaced families due to the Sayre Fire by donating to the Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles, the organizations that is acting as the lead agency on shelter management and the current relief effort.
"Overnight, hundreds of families have found themselves homeless and relying on the care of their community," Villaraigosa said. "Just ten days before Thanksgiving, I encourage all Angelenos and businesses to come to their neighbor's aid and pitch in what they can." They are accepting cash donations and in-kind gifts.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
