Silverlake Art, Craft & Vintage Flea market

East Side shoppers seeking the offbeat need not despair this holiday season, for the gals at Ghettogloss have heard their flea-market pleas. Every weekend through December 21, Silverlake's vibrant bazaar hawks everything from crafts to collectibles, and from designer pet wear to tarot readings. Located at the intersection of Silverlake and Glendale Blvds, the market calls out to artists, record collectors, vintage shoppers, and the frugal alike. And with a portion of the proceeds donated to the construction of Silver Lake's new library, there won't be any reason to feel guilty after buying yourself that gigantic homemade ceramic ashtray, even if you don't smoke.

Festival of Contemporary Dutch Music
Featuring the CalArts New Century Players and
the California E.A.R. Unit
November 14-16, 2008

One of the most vibrant and eclectic music hotspots in Europe, the Netherlands boast an exceptional wealth of up-and-coming innovators who are busy expanding not only the heterogeneity and freedom of contemporary musical content — but also the role of music and concert programming in society. This weekend festival is devoted to the work of some of today's brightest Dutch composers — artists who are exploring new and unprecedented creative horizons as diligently as they are dispensing with the convictions and values of yesteryear. The CalArts New Century Players will be performing works by Michel van der Aa, Antoine Beuger, Dante Boon, Rozalie Hirs, Christina Oorebeek, Edward Top, Matijs de Roo, Joey Roukens, Giel Vleggaar, Peter-Jan Wagemans, and Robert Zuidam. The California E.A.R. Unit follows with an early Sunday evening concert, featuring pieces by Yannis Kyriakides, Mayke Nas, Martijn Padding, Jacob ter Veldhuis and Diderik Wagenaar.
"The New Century Players perform with wonted skill and poise; one hears the music and doesnÂ’t worry about the very real difficulties of executing it." Los Angeles Times
"Triumphantly out there... The California E.A.R. Unit is known for taking left turns away from convention." Los Angeles Times

This evening's screening of 14 shorts features experimental, narrative, and documentary films and videos that use the city of Los Angeles in overtly narrative or thematic roles, thereby allowing the city to serve not only as the setting, but as a protagonist as well. Charles Doran, the program's curator, presents the LA premiere of his Westsider; Patrick Robins debuts Hair Cowboy, a documentary about a homeless hairdresser; and Echo Park film students Ava Hess and Valentina Martin offer up a music video and experimental "film poem," respectively.

Echo, Hang The Djs & Part Time Punks present
ADULT. / POP NOIR
Echoplex

Briefly a synth bass-anchored trio, Adult. is now again Detroit-based husband-and-wife Adam Lee Miller and Nicola Kuperus on their fourth album. And Adult. is your favorite Anglo-anarcho punk band since Rudimentary Peni. Don’t believe? Why Bother? will force your hesitant hand to admit it. Like snorting Paxil-laced Adderall off a Fad Gadget lithograph, Adult. is cathartic cabaret for the sketched out. Opening with “Red Herring”—the near-silent wink before the wince—Why Bother? soon descends into the digital DT’s of “Good Deeds” and “I Feel Worse When I’m With You,” featuring enough gabber for a 10-day tweakend. As it unfurls, the base of tracks such as “You Don’t Worry Enough” reveal a return to the group’s more silicon compositions, but incorporate singer Nicola Kuperus’ Siouxsie Sioux-isms plus poltergeists of atonal axe-work. The gnarled vignettes aim to alienate, which only further endears core fans, whether electro heads, electroclash survivors or no-wave fetishists. Something has contaminated the culture, and Adult.’s once hyper-sterile world is the better for it. - URB

Aaron Beaumont
Hotel Cafe

Aaron will be celebrating the release of his freshman project, "Nothing's Forever, Not Even Goodbye". A synthesis of early 20th century piano-roll influences and melodic lines reminiscent of the Beatles, along with nods to Tom Waits and Elliott Smith in works like "Julia" and "The Park Bench Song," this superb 10-track release represents a piano-centered aesthetic that is at once daring and refreshing.
With flurries of Wurlitzer, glockenspiel, and reindeer bells layering Aaron Beaumont's tunes, the singer/songwriter seems to have popped out of a music box. In fact, Beaumont recently relocated from Nashville, bringing with him a folky aesthetic chock full of charm and whimsy. Tonight, Beaumont celebrates the release of his debut album, Nothing's Forever (Not Even Goodbye), on the local indie Milan Records. The record's highlights include piano-centric love songs "The Time Will Come," "The Park Bench Song," and "Julia," each laced with an almost anachronistic sincerity that makes Beaumont's tunes all the more irresistible.

How did you got your start in Los Angeles, and how did you became such a heavy in Echo Park?

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
