n excerpt from the West Coast Performer Magazine album review:
"To proclaim that a band from L.A. “came out of nowhere” may seem a bit farfetched, but amidst little press or fanfare, indie rock newcomers Archways burst onto the music landscape with a mighty full-length debut in Lest We Forget. Led by guitarist Chris Kordash and featuring a cast of SoCal musicians, Archways channel the best of the Interpol post-punk revival and fuse it seamlessly with Coldplay’s pop melodies and, surprisingly, touches of Tool’s technical complexity." -Julia Cooper
NIGHT HORSE / TRIGGER RENEGADE /
THE HIGH SAINTS
Echo

Ripping pages from the books of Led Zeppelin, The Doors and Black Sabbath, Night Horse plots an unstoppable course straight to the heart of classic rock in the six majestic tracks that comprise the band’s Tee Pee Records debut, The Dark Won’t Hide You. Unlike so many other bands that go out of their way to sing the praises of the aforementioned groups while still remaining sonically entrenched in the pop idiom (The Parlor Mob and Keane leap to mind), Night Horse puts its’ money when its’ mouth is as guitarists Justin Muranga and Greg Buensuceso ignore fashionable brevity; none of these six tracks falls below the four-and-a-half-minute mark, and most have hard stops included to indicate movements or progressions. Instead, they favor constructing statuesque riffs and then jamming around them to color and create expansive landscapes with said riff as the focal point. For his part, Velde also invokes the ghosts of every classic rock singer you’ve ever loved by flat-out refusing to hold anything back; in songs like “Wicked Love,” “Worried Life Blues” and the title track, the singer teeters on the edge of total abandon while the band cajoles and pushes him closer to the brink. His performances are that much better for it too; the closer he gets, the more overwhelming his voice becomes until by “Shine On Me” he’s virtually yowling his demons out on tape and pulling listeners into lifelong fandom in the process. - Ground Control

Miranda Lee Richards
Tangier

Miranda Lee Richards got her start writing and recording in her hometown of San Francisco, California. She was born into the underground comics scene as her parents, Ted and Terry Richards, were cartoonists and contemporaries of R. Crumb. In 2001 she released her debut album, "The Herethereafter" (Virgin), which garnered strong press in the U.S. and produced a hit in Japan, “The Long Goodbye." She continued to play local shows and write and record music with producer Rick Parker (BRMC, Ambulance LTD). An appearance in the documentary film (DIG!), as well as consistently strong live performances and high profile film and TV placement history have kept her on the radar. The UK label Sonic Cathedral released the single "Life Boat" in November 2007; the "EARLY NOVEMBER EP" comes out 11/4/08 on iTunes, followed by the full length, "LIGHT OF X," due for worldwide release February 10th, 2009 on Nettwerk Records. Miranda Lee Richards has done collaborations with Tricky, The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Tim Burgess (Charlatans) Neil Halstead (Mojave 3) and sang with The Jesus and Mary Chain on their most recent West Coast tour.

The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.
While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO
Help the Sayre Fire Victims

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is encouraging residents and businesses to help support the hundreds of displaced families due to the Sayre Fire by donating to the Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles, the organizations that is acting as the lead agency on shelter management and the current relief effort.
"Overnight, hundreds of families have found themselves homeless and relying on the care of their community," Villaraigosa said. "Just ten days before Thanksgiving, I encourage all Angelenos and businesses to come to their neighbor's aid and pitch in what they can." They are accepting cash donations and in-kind gifts.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
