VIOLENT SOHO (from Australia)
Spaceland

2008 has already been a huge year for the four piece, having toured almost non stop with a bunch of other Aussie acts, including their current jaunt with The Mess Hall.
June saw the release of their debut album, “We Don’t Belong Here”, which has been causing quite the stir among music fans and critics alike. It’s a dirty, relentless rock affair that doesn’t skip a beat from opening track “Love is a Heavy Word”, which has been a Triple J favourite.
While the band’s early nineties influences are apparent, the question remains whether or not we are allowed to call them grunge.
“We used to call ourselves a grunge band, but then people started talking about a grunge revolution… we didn’t want to get swept up in some kind of fashion thing, and we don’t want to be pigeonholed”, says Luke.
That would be a nightmare for a band whose lack of pretension is apparent in everything they do.
“At the end of the day, you can call us whatever you want. We’re continually writing and we just want to make good, honest music”.
While Luke says the boys aren’t nervous about playing to a bunch of discerning Pixies fans at the Black Francis gigs, he’s shit scared of what the man himself might think.
“It’s slowly sinking in… we might actually get to speak to Frank Black, Frank Black might actually watch us play”.
It wouldn’t seem that Violent Soho have much to worry about in that regard. In the short time they have been gigging around the traps, they have already carved out a reputation as one of the best live acts going. - Virgin Music Blog

The Gray Kid‘s “trunk-wobbling anthems and ballads of love and lust” have established him as one of independent music’s most dynamic and entertaining performers. Having spent 2008 developing SPIRIT ANIMAL, a five-piece made up of top-call musicians who have recorded and toured with Ben Harper, The Pharcyde and Oliver Future, Gray is poised to enter a new realm of soul and dance music that recalls the grit, intensity and tenderness of bands like The Doors, Stevie Wonder and LCD Soundsystem.
First though, he’ll deal a cross-genre blow in the form of this fall’s “FREE MUSIC,” a rap and soul EP rich in musicality, hooks and wit. The record, mixed by Danny Kalb (Beck, Neon Neon, They Might Be Giants, Rilo Kiley) and produced by Gray and L.A. analog guru Computer Jay, features 18 musicians and six songs, including fan favorites “Eh Man,” “Oh My,” and “Soothsayer,” for which there is a racy, film noir music video.

M83: Back in the USA, big in the Big Apple
[Keyboardist-singer Morgan Kibby resumes her tour diary as M83 embarks on the U.S. leg of its tour. Previous diaries here.]![]()
Dear Friends and Family,
Just a small note to let you know that I am writing a tour blog for the next three months while I am traveling and playing with M83 throughout Europe and the US. The blog will be hosted by Kevin Bronson who was a senior music writer and editor for the LA Times. I am thrilled and honored that he asked me to do this. Should you have the time and the inclination to check it out, the link is as follows:

Barragan's mixes it up for Echo Park hipsters
It's Wednesday night at Barragan's and, as usual, packs of twentysomethings jam into the shoebox-sized bar, the dark-paneled restaurant booths, the upstairs banquet room and rooftop patio. They shout to be heard over the throbbing sounds coming from a D.J. spinning records as weary waitresses and bus boys bring free nachos. But the big draw at this Echo Park Mexican restaurant on Wednesday is not the music or the food. It's the $2.50 margaritas. On a good "Margarita Wednesday" the restaurant pours about 1,500 drinks... MOCA Possibly Seeking Bailout from LACMA
After news of MOCA's extreme financial situation, Culture Monster at the LA Times is hearing that MOCA will possibly "approach the Los Angeles County Museum of Art about a merger, which will effectively mean a transfer of MOCA's extraordinary collection to the Mid-Wilshire complex." Another art blogger believes LACMA would be more than willing to say "yes" to the offer. - LAist
Help the Fire Victims
Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa is encouraging residents and businesses to help support the hundreds of displaced families due to the Sayre Fire by donating to the Red Cross of Greater Los Angeles, the organizations that is acting as the lead agency on shelter management and the current relief effort.
"Overnight, hundreds of families have found themselves homeless and relying on the care of their community," Villaraigosa said. "Just ten days before Thanksgiving, I encourage all Angelenos and businesses to come to their neighbor's aid and pitch in what they can." They are accepting cash donations and in-kind gifts.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods
And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
