Ozomatli || Listen

If you’re a giddy optimist like me, you hope to one day hear Ozomatli’s cheerfully rebellious politi-pop wafting from every car radio in New York City. Don’t Mess With the Dragon is a celebration of their native L.A. in all its multicultural vibrancy and socioeconomic volatility. Singing in both English and Spanish, toying with Tower of Power horn fills during “City of Angels,” paying homage to the polymorphous funk of New Orleans during “Magnolia Soul,” and lobbing tight rhymes amid their jam-band virtuosity throughout, Ozo’s 10-man crew salute the aural mosaic of ethnic signifiers that makes our country great. You could always dance to Ozo’s beats, but this time they supply more hip-churning swing than alt-rock stomp. How many contemporary combos could shift so effortlessly from the laconic “Stoned Soul Picnic” tempo of “After Party” to the mariachi- and cumbia-inflected rhythms of “La Gallina”? C’mon, DJs: Slip a little Ozo in between Fergie, Furtado, and Shakira - Village Voice

The Muffs || Listen || Watch

Kim Shattuck formed the Muffs with bassist Ronnie Barnett, drummer Criss Crass and Melanie Vammen in 1991. After two singles for indie labels Sub Pop and Sympathy for the Record Industry in 1991/92, which generated a large underground buzz, the Muffs were picked up by Warner Bros and subsequently released their powerful eponymous debut album in 1993. Shortly after, Crass left the group and was replaced temporarily by drummer Jim Laspesa for the tour.

After switching to Reprise Records in 1994 and after a year of touring in venues throughout the world, the Muffs headed back into the studio to record the follow-up, Blonder and Blonder released in 1995; now a three-piece due to Vammen’s departure.

Right before recording Blonder and Blonder, ex- Redd Kross drummer and longtime Muffs friend Roy McDonald joined the group. Happy Birthday to Me followed in 1997 and two years later in 1999 Alert Today, Alive Tomorrow was released by Fat Wreckords; a rarities collection, Hamburger, appeared in early 2000 on Sympathy for the Record Industry… The Muffs released their new CD Really Really Happy on Five Foot Two Records during the Summer 2004 and toured the US and Japan later that year.

¡¡¡ MARK YOUR CALENDARS !!!

We had the pleasure of running into Pilar yesterday and had a chance to catch up a little. She's off to Chile for a bit, but is coming back to prepare for a February residency at Bordello. What a remarkable person...can't wait to see her play next month. Anyway, we dug up this vintage performance from her former band Los Abandoned.

Here's some video of Soko's last and only known L.A. performance:

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
