FMLY Presents
HIGH PLACES / HECUBA /
INFINITE BODY
Echo

High Places || Listen

Pearson’s saccharine vocals add an elegant grace to the High Places sound as they drift in and out of the mix, occasionally fading into nothingness. Often her vocals resemble those of Margaret Fielder from Laika, with whom High Places share more than a few joint musical fascinations.

Two of the first three tracks, “The Storm” and “The Tree with the Lights in It,” are the kind of wispy slices of cherubic electronica that have become the band’s trademark. The jittery rhythms encompass sounds that resemble treated steel drums, feet clumping through muddy water, and fizzy bursts of broken-down electronics. Barber’s sparse percussion and Pearson’s treacly vocals are the two constants throughout, occasionally lending a samey feel to the record. But it’s hard to resist their charms when they hit their stride, such as on standout track “Vision’s the First…,” which is the perfect distillation of the High Places sound. - Prefix Mag

Amebix || Listen

Amebix’s music was — and is — the sound of squalor and bleakness. “Crust” is the style they’re crediting with helping pioneer, and as genre names go, they don’t get much more descriptive. Influenced as much by Motorhead as by anarcho-punks Crass, Amebix merged metal influences with a gutter-punk mindset and a sense of apocalyptic doom. The group sidestepped the loud-fast template that was so common among early punk-metal bands, opting for a moderately paced sound built around repetitive bass lines, washed-out guitars, vaguely tribal drumming, and the occasional thin layer of gloomy keyboards. The end result often resembled early Killing Joke with half the chops and a tenth of the recording budget, which may sound like a slight, but it really isn’t. - San Francisco Bay Guardian

EL TEN ELEVEN
Silverlake Lounge

"The double-neck guitar is the ultimate signifier of musical masturbation and phallocentric crotch rocking. That is, unless you're El Ten Eleven, the post-rock duo from Los Angeles, who lay down simple rhythms, then wield the finished product as mechanized dance jams."
— Flaunt, Issue 98

"Their third record, These Promises Are Being Videotaped, is packed full of danceable melodies that put Ratatat to shame."
— Spin.com, "Artist of the Day," November 24, 2008

"Once the record stops, you want more, and more, and more."
— Filter, Winter 2008

"Equal parts heartland riffage and witty, socially aware words, the Henry Clay People level dueling guitar lines and harmonies rooted in the 12-note western scale." - Flavorpill

We had the pleasure of running into Pilar yesterday and had a chance to catch up a little. She's off to Chile for a bit, but is coming back to prepare for a February residency at Bordello. What a remarkable person...can't wait to see her play next month. Anyway, we dug up this vintage performance from her former band Los Abandoned.

Here's some video of Soko's last and only known L.A. performance:

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
