Sara Lov || Listen || MP3

The Los Angeles-based dream-pop band Devics has enchanted fans for years with its beautifully dark and moody music, but there’s hardly been a peep from the band since its 2007 album, Push the Heart. Thankfully, both singer Sara Lov and pianist Dustin O’Halloran have kept busy during Devics’ hiatus. Each is working on solo material, the latest of which is Lov’s The Young Eyes EP. Though it isn’t set for a physical release until January, the EP can currently be purchased as a digital download. It’s a glimpse into what will be Lov’s solo debut, Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming, due out in 2009.

Beginning with “New York,” The Young Eyes could at first be easily mistaken for a Devics record. O’Halloran not only helped co-write the song, but his piano playing gently backs Lov’s flawless, heartfelt vocals… Lov’s take on the Arcade Fire’s “My Body is a Cage” is absolute perfection. Her voice is irresistibly seductive on this song, and hopefully the upcoming full-length Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming will follow in a similar, melancholic path. - NPR

Les Blanks || Listen || Watch

Los Angeles indie trio Les Blanks brings the bravado in droves with this most recent LP, Shoot the Horse, a sing/speak-styled effort vocally reminiscent of Fu Manchu’s Scott Hill or Frank Black of Pixies fame.

After trademark issues sprang up over the band’s original name, Muso, the group settled on naming itself after critically lauded documentary filmmaker Les Blank. Just as The New York Times described Blank as “a documentarian of folk cultures,” Shoot the Horse chronicles a seemingly Southerly-raised youth coming to understand and criticize the world, juxtaposing Bible Belt-bred piety and God-fearing reverence with implied hypocrisy. Most apparent in the Wurlitzer-driven “Grand Kickstand,” lead singer Joshua Caldwell croons, “Strong hand commands in holy land / Brain brand the kid with Judas tan.”

Nothing if not dynamic, the album’s sound runs the gamut — the tinny, rapid-fire thrashing coming from Caldwell’s Telecaster on “Starry Tilting Sizzle” invites the swagger and sway of hips and boots on crowded dance floors, while the ragtime-tinged piano found in “La Reina” calls for a laidback saloon-style listening session. - Performer Mag

¡¡¡ MARK YOUR CALENDARS !!!

From LXS:

We got sick of no one dancing so we started up a club with a bunch of friends.

No Culture will happen every Wednesday @ the Echo. We'll try to keep the cover as low as possible while bringing in the best local and international DJs and dance acts.

EPR and Guns 'n' Bombs and Goddollars are doing the night with our friends in Acid Girls, Mark and Ron from cobrasnake.com, the CLASSIXX gents, Alicia from Big Stereo, Russ and Dan from Royal Rumble, Matt from Dance Right, Dan (again) and Ron (again) from Cosmic Kids, Omar, and young Brendan. I'm probably forgetting someone but I'm old as shit.

We're all really excited about the night and hope you are, too.

We had the pleasure of running into Pilar yesterday and had a chance to catch up a little. She's off to Chile for a bit, but is coming back to prepare for a February residency at Bordello. What a remarkable person...can't wait to see her play next month. Anyway, we dug up this vintage performance from her former band Los Abandoned.

Evermore I'm convinced that Mr. Ward's obsessions (and sometimes rants) continually bear fruit and consistently provide us good bits like this one:

EMMY THE GREAT - City Song (live)

This here below is fantastic listening!!! It first aired on Thanksgiving and was on this morning as well. A really great piece with incredible music interludes:

Who knew in 1958 when furniture designer Gerald McCabe opened up a small 15 foot wide guitar repair shop in Santa Monica that it would become one of the most beloved and venerable music institutions in the country and a bona-fide LA treasure?

And yet, despite itself, it has done just that, thanks to it’s down-home aesthetic, inventive approach to instrument repair of all things stringed, their music school, and of course the world famous concerts that take place in the tiny back room where for 5 decades artists from Doc Watson to PJ Harvey have offered up some of the most intimate performances this city has ever seen. >more - KCRW.com

Dear Friends and Family,

Just a small note to let you know that I am writing a tour blog for the next three months while I am traveling and playing with M83 throughout Europe and the US. The blog will be hosted by Kevin Bronson who was a senior music writer and editor for the LA Times. I am thrilled and honored that he asked me to do this. Should you have the time and the inclination to check it out, the link is as follows:

I hope this email finds you all healthy and happy, and hopefully i will see you while I'm on the road.

Lots of love,

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
