N.A.S.A. is a new global-groove duo comprising Brazilian DJ Zegon and L.A.-based producer Squeak E. Clean, the latter of whom is known to the IRS as Sam Spiegel and to the celebrity press as the younger brother of director Spike Jonze. (The group's name stands for North America South America.) Next month Anti- Records is set to release N.A.S.A.'s appealingly daffy debut, The Spirit of Apollo, which features collaborations with an absurdly long list of blog-bait guest stars including Kool Keith, David Byrne, Tom Waits, the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs front woman Karen O, with whom Spiegel wrote the score for a Jonze-directed Adidas spot a few years ago. When I visited the duo at Spiegel's Hollywood headquarters in 2007 for a magazine profile, they talked passionately about wanting to break down boundaries between different types of music fans. A year and a half later, I'm not entirely convinced that they didn't mean different types of hipsters. -By Mikael Wood, L.A. Weekly

Sara Lov || Listen || MP3

The Los Angeles-based dream-pop band Devics has enchanted fans for years with its beautifully dark and moody music, but there’s hardly been a peep from the band since its 2007 album, Push the Heart. Thankfully, both singer Sara Lov and pianist Dustin O’Halloran have kept busy during Devics’ hiatus. Each is working on solo material, the latest of which is Lov’s The Young Eyes EP. Though it isn’t set for a physical release until January, the EP can currently be purchased as a digital download. It’s a glimpse into what will be Lov’s solo debut, Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming, due out in 2009.

Beginning with “New York,” The Young Eyes could at first be easily mistaken for a Devics record. O’Halloran not only helped co-write the song, but his piano playing gently backs Lov’s flawless, heartfelt vocals… Lov’s take on the Arcade Fire’s “My Body is a Cage” is absolute perfection. Her voice is irresistibly seductive on this song, and hopefully the upcoming full-length Seasoned Eyes Were Beaming will follow in a similar, melancholic path. - NPR

The Voyeurs || Watch

Most of you probably recognize them as former members of E>K>U>K and current side project Vaudeville. Its members are also the brains behind the burgeoning South Bay label Otik Records. Voyeurs drummer Sean Johnson and has also been spotted playing with the likes of Shirley Rolls and The Sweet Hurt and some of you may know them as the kickball champions with keen fashion sense. These guys are ubiquitous around town and are always down to help out a friend. I’m actually shocked that I haven’t written about them before!

The Voyeurs rose from the ashes of the now defunct pulse-pounding rock act E>K>U>K. Their music still displays the raw energy and catchy tunes that became an E>K>U>K trademark but takes the sound one step further with a FANTASTIC mix of 60s pop and down n’ dirty classic rock. It’s tunes like these that gets me excited about music again. Their songs are totally solid and show a great deal of promise. - Rock Insider

Composer/Arrangers are the antecedents of the beat makers of today. Their processes whether it be stripping down a classic cover or creating a new genre of music mirror most closely the types of minds that make contemporary beat oriented music. "Timeless" is a forward thinking review and homage to the arranger/composers that have influenced hip-hop in the heaviest and most profound ways. Representing a true international blend of music from Brazil, Ethiopia, Detroit and Los Angeles. Each composer/arranger that we have scheduled is a King of their respective court.

* Objective: Encourage the appreciation of many forms of music from a multi-generational perspective with an emphasis on the practices of the present.
* Create a yearly Arranger/Composer Series in Los Angeles.
* Provide affordable musical experiences.

Each show will be a very specific presentation of music based around the career of each of the Composers. Each composer will do a set of their all time hits and a new piece. Each dj/producer will build a set around the legacy and era of each composer.

Sunday Evenings from February 1st to April 5th

Venue: Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex

This was a really great listen...and now today, I can't get off their site. I might have to indulge in a little gift for myself...

Judy Hyman plays fiddle in a band called The Horse Flies. In her living room in Ithaca, N.Y., there's a pine-wood dresser right next to the couch. It's not for shirts and sweaters — this used dresser holds hundreds of precious cassette tapes, an archive of rare recordings that spans more than three decades. She recorded many of them herself; the rest were gifts from other musicians and collectors.

We had the pleasure of running into Pilar yesterday and had a chance to catch up a little. She's off to Chile for a bit, but is coming back to prepare for a February residency at Bordello. What a remarkable person...can't wait to see her play next month. Anyway, we dug up this vintage performance from her former band Los Abandoned.

Here's some video of Soko's last and only known L.A. performance:

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
