Doods dig Girls, girls dig Girls - the scraggly SF white boy (not girl) band. This is a show you do not want to miss. Christopher Owens and Chet JR White perform pop songs that contain aggressive dramatic guitar playing with bright catchy hooks. Think Jesus & Mary Chain, MBV, and Glasvegas. Last year, their limited edition 7” entitled “Lust for Life,” sold out in just a week. The song is not a tribute to or an Iggy Pop cover, but a fun happy song that will have you singing along and dancing to after a few listens. The band has received rave reviews and accolades from SF Bay Area press (as well as our pals at Pitchfork Media and Gorilla vs Bear) and are currently working on new material for their forthcoming debut full-length.
WOUNDED LION
Wounded Lion are Brad, Ami, Shant, Chris, Jun and Raffi, and they join the Lamps as the L.A. contingent on the excellent S.S. Records label. They have something to offer fans of joy, skronk, fire, Paris 1942 and Karate Party. They speak deliberately in order to communicate more completely.” - LA Record

To paraquote something Henry Rollins once wrote in his classic book, Get in the Van: I once saw Lightning Bolt make people lose their shit, but not like HEALTH. I have no basis of comparison to other HEALTH shows, but this will go down as one of the best live shows I’ve seen in my life, and I’ve seen more than a few. While HEALTH’s records are good, they don’t hold a candle to the live performance. Jerking themselves around like puppets the musicians were electrifying, and that crypto-divine power transferred to the audience, who writhed and jumping about with total abandon. To be honest, the crowd did get a little obnoxious, with more than a few people spilling splashes of drinks on pedal boards — something that made the musician in me cringe.
Although to some, HEALTH’s music might have sounded like utter chaos with occasional moments of sublime musical beauty, to me it was like they had taken the essence of no wave, post-punk, harsh noise and electronic pop and created an alchemical blend of all of it that was unbelievably intense and visceral. - Westword

Porn, hunger and a mysterious vibe in Echo Park

Under ordinary circumstances, I wouldn't find a way to get porn and hunger into the same column. But when you fish for a living, you never know what you might catch.
The story begins with my neighbor Hilda working out one morning at Curves, where her buddy Gloria from Echo Park tells her about a mysterious problem she's having with gay sex magazines. The two of them decide that Gloria should shoot me an e-mail, and here's the story:

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
