ORENDA FINK
Also known as one half of Georgia's Azure Ray, Orenda emerges on her first solo release as a new musical treasure. She's inspired, bold, perceptive and real, and Invisible Ones soars with unassuming brilliance. Engineered by Andy LeMaster (Now It's Overhead) and co-produced by Andy LeMaster and Orenda Fink. Featuring appearances by Todd Fink (The Faint), Scott Amendola, Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio), Martin Perna (Antibalas), Dan McCarthy (Mayday and McCarthy Trenching), Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes, The Faint, Rilo Kiley), Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers), and Rozna Zila and Sandy M. Saint-Cyr (Troupe Macandal).

The Mighty Diamonds, Donald “Tabby” Shaw, Fitzroy ”Bunny” Simpson and Lloyd “ Judge” Ferguson formed in 1969 in the Trenchtown area of Kingston, Jamaica and for the past 39 years have been entertaining and educating the world with their sweet harmonies and conscious lyrics.
They quickly became known as the young group with the Motown sound with their soulful harmonies and polished performances. They first hit singles “ Country Living” and “ Hey Girl” were recorded on the Channel One label. Their debut album “ Right Time”, released on the Virgin has become a classic. This is an album that belongs in every serious reggae collection. “ Right Time’ is probably their most requested song when they perform.
“ Pass the Kouchie” also became an international hit when first released and then again when it was covered by the “ Musical Youth” and released as “Pass the Dutchie”
Tabby, Bunny and Judge have produced over 45 albums in their long career and it would be hard to select just one album as a favorite but if I were asked to pick the definite Mighty Diamonds album I would have to say “ Deeper Roots”. This album proves that the Mighty Diamonds are truly the best in the business.

The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.
While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO
Thanks for the link, Mat! It seems Dave "really liked that, no seriously..."

Hothouse Flowers
New works by Ian O'phelan
Ghettogloss

Ian O’Phelan (b. 1982, a Pisces) hails from Toledo, OH. He graduated from the University of Cincinnati, where he pursued a Frankenstein curriculum of fine art and graphic design classes. Mr. O’Phelan currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.
“I think of my artwork as a meandering study and description of natural objects. My portfolio, an ever growing Wunderkammer, is a collection of the ironic and the sentimental. It provides a means of reconciling a bubbling unconscious spiritualism with the mundanities of daily life.”
Hothouse Flowers
This upcoming exhibition is a collection of drawings and collage which capture the outgrowth of the transcendental in a world of banalities. Stills from cartoons and commercials burst forth with bouquets of fresh cut flowers. Parking tickets and porn provide the rich compost for new growth. Featuring O'Phelan's unique linework this show revels in human mark making in an era of computer rendering.

But is Sarah Negahdari the strangest woman in rock? You decide. We’ll say this: She’s one of the coolest. A killer hybrid of Kim Deal, PJ Harvey and Emily Haines, Negahdari has the guitar chops, explosive energy and winning sense of humor that should make The Happy Hollows one of the more interesting band of our new millennium’s next decade. Keep an eye out for her. - Wired Magazine

"..they've gotten really goddamn good live... I couldn't stop smiling and I found myself looking forward to hearing them play tonight even before they were done with their set. And the EP? Also great." - Joe Feilder - Radio Free Silver Lake

Amongst the myriad of musicians that call Los Angeles home, Local Natives, a band favoring a new breed of energetic, percussion driven indie rock, have come to fruition. This clan of five gentleman craft songs reminiscent of a musical tribe, singing and dancing in harmony. Imagine if Beirut and Sufjan Stevens decided to join the eccentricity of Talking Heads and the aura of Broken Social Scene for lunch in Columbia and you’ve pinpointed what is Local Natives. In the age of auto tune and vocoders, Local Natives is one of those rare bands who is defined by their ability to deliver live. In fact, it has been more of challenge for the group to translate the vibrant and exciting nature of their performances to a recording than vice versa. But blessed with the charisma to tempt even the most despondent hipsters and shy concert goers into dance machines, Local Natives have honed their skills in both recording and performing the past few years. - Bio

The holloys’ dynamically evolving sound of avant-garde techniques and influences drawn from a diverse range of cultural traditions and musical genres culminates in the release of Art Wars, their new, five-track EP. With its beat-heavy blend of trance, dance, Afropop polyrhythm, neo-prog, electronica and soaring pop melodies, Art Wars finally ushers rock into the 21st century.
Los Angeles-based visual artist and musician Jim Brown has taken the holloys through many incarnations and performance venues. Jim has toured the holloys throughout Mexico and Japan as a solo act, performed in the piss-stained alleys and lofts of LA’s gallery district, and has included an acclaimed solo show at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. At the same time, the holloys sound has evolved from ambient noise through abstract trance jamming to Art Wars’ successful reintegration of song and voice on its five, searing, pop-inflected and exquisitely danceable tracks.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
