For a Chung King Road gallery showing, the idea of an exhibition celebrating the Chinese New Year might not be that odd. But the new two-person exhibition Hampah (Farsi for "two walkers sharing a path") instead commemorates the Persian New Year. A collaborative undertaking between Bay Area artists Ala Ebtekar and Taravat Talepasand, both Iranian-Americans, the show finds the two pursuing its thread in diverse ways. Ebtekar's work draws on and merges paradigms of urban street art, political events, and decorative tradition; Talepasand, on the other hand, uses more confrontational, narrative imagery to directly challenge the intransigent taboos and prejudices that endure in society. – Shana Nys Dambrot, Flavorpill

Black Mountain || Listen || Watch

Black Mountain’s self-titled 2005 debut was crammed full of Sabbath-inspired riffs and thick, druggy dirges, and the Vancouver quintet seemed poised to charge Queens Of The Stone Age’s stoner-rock castle, unkempt beards flapping wildly in the wind. In The Future offers the same intense, throbbing psych-prog, but with a few new, welcome flourishes: Stephen McBean’s deep, throaty howls remain paramount, but vocalist Amber Webber is a much more prominent force now, and her otherworldly warbles balance nicely against McBean’s pipes. Structurally, Black Mountain still favors quick changes and untraceable arrangements, and although it’s easy to accuse the band of aping all of 1975 (at times, Black Mountain sounds like the best Led Zeppelin cover band ever), the riffs are mostly unimpeachable. The eight-minute single “Tyrants” is an epic celebration of what Black Mountain does best, with its intense, building guitar slams, bowel-emptying drums, and sudden bursts of calm. Loud-quiet-loud has never been so dizzying. - The Onion AV Club

Here's some great SXSW stuff I got into today...

The Austin 100: A SXSW Mix

NPR.org - In preparation for the 2009 South by Southwest music festival (March 18-21), NPR Music's spent weeks sampling songs by more than 1,000 of the acts in attendance. Some of the music induced swooning, some of it induced sleepiness, and some of it made us want to pry out our eardrums and swallow them for safe keeping. (We're looking at you, Gaybomb.) Arranged alphabetically by artist, the 100 songs in this ridiculously bountiful — but by no means definitive — mix all passed a simple litmus test, summed up in six simple words: "Yeah, I'd listen to that again." Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
