Amadou And Mariam
Well Beyond Mali
By Robert Christgau

All Things Considered, March 26, 2009 - The self-billed "blind couple of Mali" have been recording since the '80s, and they've never been strictly Malian about it. In 1999, Amadou and Mariam's "Chantez-Chantez," features the duo singing in unison, which is atypical for them — they usually split the vocals. But the thick, rock-ish tone of husband Amadou Bagayoko'a guitar is almost a signature. And then there's the underlying riff, the kind of bluesy thing you think you've heard before — for good reason....
FANTASTICO!!!
Grandaddy's Jason Lytle @ SXSW
Watch the Video

NPR.org, March 25, 2009 - Jason Lytle got his start as the frontman for the Modesto, Calif., rock band Grandaddy. Through the '90s, until the group disbanded in 2006, Grandaddy built a loyal audience by making beautifully orchestrated, neo-psychedelic space-pop. It was a carefully crafted blend of gentle acoustic strums and swirling electronics, with Lytle's lyrics exploring the lives of the lonely, the heartbroken and robots with drinking problems...

Laughing Matter: Comedy’s New Legends

In these tough times, America is lucky to have the community of comic talent featured here: men and women who will band together for the perfect setup, charm laughs from their audience, and seize on just about any icon—a Founding Father, a famous artist, even a V.F. cover—as ripe for gentle subversion. From Russell Brand’s Chaplin to Seth Rogen’s Frida Kahlo to an all-star update of The Honeymooners, V.F.’s photographers capture a new generation’s take on its favorite legends, and Jim Windolf figures out why their particular brand of funny fits the national mood. HOT PANDA
Silverlake Lounge

When you get compared, in the same breath, to everything from Daniel Johnson to the Talking Heads, you know you have a sound that's hard to pin down. Since their formation during the particularly chilly winter of 2006, the members of Hot Panda (Maghan Campbell, Keith Olsen, Chris Connelly, and Heath Parsons) have yet to sit down and have the discussion that goes: "So, what should we sound like?". The result is a swath of tunes that sound like anything and everything. Brit pop, gypsy swing, opera solos, Robert Pollard style lo-fi jangles, glammy Roxy Music keyboards, and "melodies that will be impossible to dislodge from your temporal cortex" (ChartAttack), all find their home in the music of Hot Panda...sometimes all in the same song! - Hot Panda

Kenan Bell || Listen || Watch
Wasn’t too long ago that Kenan Bell, above, cringed when he heard “rapper” uttered with his name. “In so many places there’s a negative connotation with the word,” the 25-year-old says, agreeing that, yes, one of those places might be the private school in Montrose where he teaches fourth- through sixth-graders. “But even with the negative persona rap music has, I think I can make music that embodies better things.” Bell, above, is off to a good start – with childhood pal Jason Burkhart and music vet Jon Siebels (Eve6), he released his “Good Day” EP earlier this year, is putting the finishing touches on a full-length album and has captured the fancy of L.A. crowds with his spry melodies and sprightly wordplay, thanks in part to a live lineup that includes the likes of guitarist Josh Klinghoffer and drummer Eric Gardner. A rock and jazz fan whose parents sang gospel, Bell manages to blend pop sensibilities, indie-rock edge and hip-hop attitude into rapid-fire soliloquies that even his students could love. - LA Times Buzz Bands

Juliette Commagere
Listen to/Watch entire show: Los Angeles chanteuse Juliette Commagere levitates listeners with her celestial songs on Morning Becomes Eclectic with Jason BentleyJULIETTE COMMAGERE
“Why should Enya get all the echoey, pulsating, chiming soundscapes? Juliette Commagere, who leads the band Hello Stranger and has sung with Puscifer and Avenged Sevenfold, makes her own claim to overdubbed chorales and synthetic paradises on her solo album “Queens Die Proudly” (Aeronaut). But she’s much more approachable than Enya; Ms. Commagere saves the massed harmonies for choruses, and she sings most of the time with her sweet soprano voice fully exposed. It’s an album of lonely post-breakup songs.” - New York Times

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
