THE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES

White Denim || Listen

With their EPs, Austin’s White Denim have built buzz as the next heroes of fuzzed-out psychedelic power blues in the style of the White Stripes and the Black Keys. But while “All You Really Have to Do” and “Shake Shake Shake” support that rep, their debut full-length shows a more versatile outfit. “Don’t Look That Way at It” mixes looped guitar swarms, wordless chants and off-kilter grooves. “Wda” is a gear-shifting jam that echoes golden-era Pavement. And “All Truckers Roll” is a woozy road anthem with banjo, raga-rock drones and time-signature kookiness that points to drummer Josh Block’s jazz roots. Where they go from here is anyone’s guess. - Rolling Stone

The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.

While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO

TRISTON PALMA
For over twenty years, Triston Palma has been delighting listeners around the world with his sweet voice and cultural vibes. Though reggae has gone through many changes since the ’70s, Triston has endured, always staying true to roots and culture. He has given reggae one of its biggest dancehall anthems, “Entertainment,” which still rams the dance whenever it is played, and he has scored hits around the world up to this day.

Triston Palma was born in 1962 in Waltham Park, Kingston 13, Jamaica. By the time he was just ten years old, he was singing backing vocals for Sugar Minott and Tony Tuff, as well as singing with Earl “Chinna” Smith’s Soul Syndicate band. Throughout his teens, Triston’s reputation as a sweet voiced vocalist continued to grow, culminating in his breakout performance in 1979 at the General Penitentiary Memorial Concert for Claudie Massop, which also featured Bob Marley. Around the same time, Triston started his own label, Black Solidarity, with Ossie Thomas. His first big hit on the label was “A-Class Girl,” which was followed by “I’m Ready,” “Susan,” “What A Bubbling,” and “Spliff Tale.” All of these tunes were number one hits on the Jamaican charts.

As the ’80s began, the best was yet to come. Jah Thomas, who had been residing in England, came over to Jamaica to check out the young singer everyone was talking about. Their association led to one of the biggest dancehall hits of all time: the aforementioned “Entertainment.” Triston recorded over thirty more tunes for Jah Thomas in the early ’80s, including “Give Me A Chance” and “Joker Smoker.” At one point, Triston had nine songs in Jamaica’s Top 40 at the same time, and this was before he had even reached the age of twenty!

MICHAEL PALMER
Michael Palmer is a veteran dancehall singer rarely seen in California . He started his career singing on General Echo’s Stereophonic Sound System. He had several huge hits hits in Jamaica in the 80’s , such as “Lickshot” , “Ready me Ready” , and “Smoke the Weed”.

CLIVE CHIN

Grandaddy's Jason Lytle @ SXSW

Jason Lytle; credit: Robin Hilton / NPR
NPR.org, March 25, 2009 - Jason Lytle got his start as the frontman for the Modesto, Calif., rock band Grandaddy. Through the '90s, until the group disbanded in 2006, Grandaddy built a loyal audience by making beautifully orchestrated, neo-psychedelic space-pop. It was a carefully crafted blend of gentle acoustic strums and swirling electronics, with Lytle's lyrics exploring the lives of the lonely, the heartbroken and robots with drinking problems...

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
