WAVVES
FOL CHEN / VAMPIRE HANDS
Echo

What do you get when you cross the Beach Boys’ sunny melodies with the atonal guitars of Sonic Youth? Wavves, a one-man band starring 22-year-old Nathan Williams, a laid-back San Diego skateboarder who spends his days watching Cops and The Price Is Right, gulps 40s, blogs about hip-hop — and is set to be one of indie rock’s next big things in 2009.
Williams took the stagename Wavves in February 2008, after he began jamming in his bedroom on electric guitar, channeling his influences — Beatles, Nirvana, the Vaselines, the Wipers — into really distorted punk tunes with hummable hooks. On Halloween, he performed for the first time (with friend Ryan Ulsh on drums) and soon started recording his songs on Garage Band. “It just snowballed from there,” Williams tells SPIN.com.
Indie label Woodsist dropped Wavves’ self-titled debut to critical acclaim from bloggers late last year — and on March 17, Williams will return with the album Wavvves (notice the extra “v”), which displays his easygoing ‘tude.
“So Bored,” one of the record’s best tracks (download below), features surf guitar and crunchy power-chord rhythms. “The song is about being young, bored, weird, lonely, awkward, stupid, bullied… whatever,” says Williams. - Spin.com

“…Packed with hard driving drumbeats and accompanied with Rob’s strong voice… the listener is then rocketed into the abyss of their own imaginations. Not to mention the heavy guitar riffs that seems to resonate and awaken anyone’s soul.” - Deli Magazine
“…Lemon Sun are a versatile local pop outfit with a sound that employs all your fave 60’s-jangle-harmony-beat conventions without the tired retro smarm…charasmatic guitar-pop without pretense. Refreshing.Keep it simple, silly!”
Amoeba Records
“Their deliciously syncopated Hot Rocks’ style compositions are easy to love. While such on stage guitar-mageddon could have been deadly in different hands, each sweet, soul inspired confection was rhythmically unwrapped and devoured with the most perfect grace… Lead singer Rob Kolar rightfully belongs in the brave new generation of blue-eyed soul singers; his frequent comparisons to a young Eric Burdon (or a male Chris Clark) are not without merit.”

The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.
While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
