Angus & Julia Stone
Amoeba Records
Tonight 6:30pm - Hollywood

Angus & Julia Stone's cinematic folk music is anchored by the band's namesake siblings, with percussionist Mitch Connelly and bassist Clay McDonald adding instrumental flourishes to the mix. Growing up in the northern beaches of Sydney, the Stone siblings were taught the history of pop music from an early age by their father, who played in a cover band. In 2005, Julia Stone began teaching trumpet lessons while her brother Angus worked as a laborer. She convinced him to test his musical talents by performing locally, and he responded by bringing her on-stage with him as a backing musician. At first, the two played separately billed shows, but each would support the other onstage to the point where it made sense to share billing credits.
The duo released an EP of early material, Chocolates & Cigarettes, before moving to London in 2006, where the siblings met Fran Healy of the band Travis. Impressed with the band's material, as well as their growing buzz in both Australia and England, Healy invited the Stones to his house to use his piano. The twosome eventually recorded their entire second EP, Heart Full of Wine, at the residence. In return, Julia Stone provided backing vocals on the Travis record The Boy with No Name. Angus & Julia Stone's debut album, A Book Like This, is out now on Nettwerk Records. - All Music Guide

It's another night of the No Culture club at the Echo, but then perhaps they're being ironic, because in fact you couldn't ask for a higher-heaped plate of resonant new cultural madness than this night of musical and art provocateurs, all aligned with the exceedingly relevant Manimal Vinyl. Tonight is ostensibly a record-release party for Hecuba's new Paradise album, due soon and which, like last year's obliquely rarefied electro-pop-gospel-grainy-'70s-PBS-science-show Sir EP, offers an even deeper dive into the duo's multidimension music from a parallel universe. They're also visual artists with a fine eye for unsettling plumage and film projections, so look out. Hecuba's eerily complementary label mates Rainbow Arabia are something like hearing Hecuba from the other side of the globe; their unusually piquant blend of Middle Eastern microtonalisms and rhomboid polyrhythms gets crosshatched with catawampus guitar and vocals, and it's a real toe-tapper's delight. Lucky Dragons will strew the stage with things to pluck on, toot and beat at, maybe drag you up there to help out. - John Payne, LA Weekly

Brigadier Jerry emerged in the late 1970’s, as one of the most popular cultural DJ’s to regularly improvise over the Jamaican sound systems. Highly respected in Jamaica as a conscious DJ, Briggy was a soundsystem teacher, teaching Rasta culture to the multitudes. Bootleg recordings of these dancehall sessions started to leak out internationally amongst the deeper cultural enthusiasts, spreading Briggy’s name abroad. In the years to come, other DJ’s were to follow his example, but Brigadier Jerry remains as the teacher, who set the standard. His vibe and lyrics have an Old Testament Biblical quality about them, that is both edifying and endearing.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
