Exclusive First Listen:
Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band's
'Outer South'

NPR.org - When Conor Oberst hit the road last year in support of his eponymous solo debut, he took with him a group of close, longtime friends he dubbed The Mystic Valley Band. The group of half a dozen musicians had helped Oberst record his country-flavored album in Tepoztlan, Mexico's Valle Mistico in early 2008. While on tour, Oberst and members of the band continued to write and share songs with one another, eager to capture the energy of their live performances. By the end of 2008, Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band had enough material for a second album, and entered a studio in Tornillo, Texas, to lay down 16 new tracks. The album they came up with, Outer South, won't be released until May 5, but you can hear it in its entirety on NPR Music as an Exclusive First Listen. CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE.
Ceci Bastida
Silverlake Lounge

Ceci Bastida was born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. At 15, she became the lead vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter for Tijuana NO!, one of the most important Latin rock bands of the nineties. Having become one of the first women to rise through the ranks of Latin rock music,Ceci is now embarking on her first project as a solo artist, for which she has recorded demos with producer Jason Roberts (Control Machete, Plastilina Mosh), Grammy nominated guitarist-songwriter Marthin Chan (Volumen Cero, JD Natasha) and Grammy-winning bassist Wil-Dog Abers of Ozomatli.
“This lady is just a great singer-songwriter... [Her songs] resonate with buoyant melodies that transcend language barriers.” - LA Underground
“Bastida breezes into a well-earned solo career with hearty, skirt-flipping gusto. Her confident vocals combined with shrewd songwriting skills highlight a knack for the unusual.” - Austin Chronicle

RICHARD LINKLATER
IS STILL DAZED AND CONFUSED

Last night our spy, who goes by the super secret spy name Eric, was at a screening of Dazed & Confused held to support Austin mayoral candidate Brewster McCraken, who you have to get behind just for his name. Richard Linklater was in the house, and at the Q&A after the movie he talked a little bit about what's coming next for him. And that would be 'a sort of spiritual sequel' to Dazed.
The movie, which he is shooting in and around Austin this summer, will be about the first weekend of college in 1980. So while thematically it'll bookend Dazed, it won't have any of the same characters (which makes sense, as all of the actors are decades older and would look weird pretending it's just four years later).
Linklater's been talking about this movie for a while, but the fact that he plans on shooting it this summer seems to be the new bit of news. Of course, even without that I'd be happy to run any article that champions Linklater - who was once one of my favorite directors - getting back into that loosey-goosey, day-in-the-life style that he is so perfect with. - Chud.com

Her most recent album came out on Kill Rock Stars, but San Francisco–based Thao Nguyen doesn't sound like one of the venerable Seattle indie's noisy love-punk bands: On last year's We Brave Bee Stings and All, Nguyen convincingly refreshes the sort of strummy, acoustic singer-songwriter music that lately has seemed like the exclusive province of earnest Grey's Anatomy types, outfitting her tunes with a rhythmic complexity and a textural fleet-footedness that keep you guessing as to what's coming next. Here she'll perform with her curiously named backing band, the Get Down Stay Down, whose members Nguyen hooked up with during her days in Virginia. Opener Samantha Crain, from Oklahoma, plays a whimsical brand of melancholy folk-rock distinguished mostly by Crain's handsomely husky vocals. - Mikael Wood, LA Weekly

OLIVER FUTURE
FRANZ NICOLAY (of The Hold Steady)
MONEYBROTHER
Spaceland

In Oliver Future’s new configuration, Lit will remain out front, his brother will man a bank of keyboards affectionately called “rig-zilla” and Raver will drum. “Sam just went out and bought a kit and said, ‘I’m going to be your drummer and we’re going to be a three-piece,’” Noah Lit says. “So the story is we just downsized because of the economy.” Lit says the trio “locked ourselves into an antique storage warehouse” and thrashed out new songs. “If you like the more epic and weird stuff on the first record, you’ll like his,” he adds. “There’s no feeling anymore that we have to write a single. But in a weird way, when there’s just three people playing — even though the songs are out there — everything just sounds more simple. “Before we were like an aircraft carrier. But there’s something to be said for being minimalistic.” - Buzz Bands
The Hold Steady's got a secret weapon in keyboardist Franz Nicolay, whose retro whorehouse piano rollin' and way-overenthusiastic background singing (and hair-flinging) give that eclectic nuevo bar band a lot of its fresh artistic chutzpah. The chameleonic, boldly mustachioed Nicolay — also currently coloring World/Inferno Friendship Society and Anti-Social Music — has his own new solo thingie out called Major General (Fistolo Records), a charisma-dripping identity crisis in which the multi-instrumentalist (and very suave individual) makes the best of his time with a cinematically scaled opera of open-heartedly big ballads, wayward Gypsy troubadour tales and hilariously scabrous sermons about the importance of living large in these crampingly caution-strewn times. Nicolay will perform, in a tad less wide-screen mode, the album's thrilling hodgepodge of howlers; he's invited Grammy-winning Swedes Moneybrother along, since he could relate to their weird new Scandinavian stew of reggae, disco and roots-rocking thrash. - John Payne, LA Weeklywith:

A Eulogy For The Boombox
By Frannie Kelley

Before there were iPods, or even CDs, and around the time cassettes let break dancers move the party to a cardboard dance floor on the sidewalk, there were boomboxes. It's been 20 years since the devices disappeared from the streets. It's high time to press rewind on this aspect of America's musical history. - Listen Now

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
