The Health Club was formed in Los Angeles in the very beginning of the new millennium, with Gerard on vocals and guitar, Katya on bass, and Gabriel on drums and vocals. Their sound is the love child of Dylan's lyrics and the Beatles' music molested by the Sex Pistols.

Speak Easy begins with the twangy “Omaha Nights,” one of the poppier moments on the album. The bass gives off that ’70s vibe, bringing Fleetwood Mac instantly to mind. It is easy to find yourself nodding along to this one, which easily flows into “Atlantis.” The country subtlety gets pushed aside by just a bit of T Rex, especially in the vocals of Waggoner. The music holds back for most of this track, only kicking in with a steady thumping beat towards the end. What keeps it interesting is the soaring strings of Jong, adding just enough color to keep my ears intrigued.
“Cigarettes” is one of the standouts on the album, allowing Jong’s strings to take center stage. The layered violins are surrounded by the steady pulse of sleigh bells and a kick drum, weaving in and out of the plucking of an acoustic guitar. It is a really lush instrumental, making for a nice segue into “Spectacular Fall.” The tempo stays the same going from the cinematic instrumental to this sprawling track, up until the halfway point when the beat kicks in.
Amateurs are much more about creating soundscapes than many of their indie-folk peers. They offer a nice balance of accessible ’70s countrified a.m. radio rock with their other more sonically ambitious tracks. With a debut LP this strong, I don’t expect to see them unsigned for much longer. - The Tripwire

Ponytail is the sound of ecstasy: tall exclamation points of guitar, mad, rambunctious percussion and wild-eyed ululations, an enormous blast of shocking pink bouncing off the walls and shooting up toward the sun. It’s absolute happiness, a drill boring straight down into the human id and recording everything it finds. You could call it no wave if it wasn’t so bright-eyed and bursting with joy. Old-time noiseniks embraced chaos as a weapon, but Ponytail are more interested in hugging than haranguing. The guitars prick like apostrophes, skipping across the top of songs; the drums are hollow and throbbing, tribal rhythms from some Martian colony. So it’s a pleasant surprise that, in person, the group’s four members are irrepressibly cheery, chatty and — above all else — down-to-earth. Vocalist Molly Siegel — a leaping, shrieking cipher on stage — is as giddy and talkative as a teenager. Guitarist Dustin Wong is all smiles and patient explanations, and all four of them seem genuinely touched and stunned that an interviewer would buy them dinner (at one point, Siegel asked if it was ok that she ordered an iced tea). If to hear them is to develop a crush, to meet them is to fall head-over-heels in love. - EMusic

At the tender age of twenty five, Jex has created a local music empire. Not only has she launched a very influential record label, JAXART out of her living room, she still makes time for her music blog,Rock Insider, and her band The Monolators, and somehow her day job. Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band's
'Outer South'
NPR.org - When Conor Oberst hit the road last year in support of his eponymous solo debut, he took with him a group of close, longtime friends he dubbed The Mystic Valley Band. The group of half a dozen musicians had helped Oberst record his country-flavored album in Tepoztlan, Mexico's Valle Mistico in early 2008. While on tour, Oberst and members of the band continued to write and share songs with one another, eager to capture the energy of their live performances. By the end of 2008, Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band had enough material for a second album, and entered a studio in Tornillo, Texas, to lay down 16 new tracks. The album they came up with, Outer South, won't be released until May 5, but you can hear it in its entirety on NPR Music as an Exclusive First Listen. CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE.

Sleepwalking Through the Mekong follows Los Angeles based band Dengue Fever on their recent journey to Cambodia to perform 60s and 70s Cambodian rock n' roll in the country where it was created and very nearly destroyed. The odyssey is a homecoming for singer Chhom Nimol and a transformation for the rest of the band as they perform with master musicians and record new songs along the way.

We represent our community on issues ranging from affordable housing and sustainability to arts, land use, education, and public safety.
Our 28-member volunteer Board of Directors represents residents, business owners, public and private sector employees, the homeless, social service providers, artists, and educators across Downtown and is elected by stakeholders every two years. Past successes include ArtWalk and other community events such as Park[ing] Day LA, Project Homeless Connect, community mixers and advocacy on many community issues.
The Downtown Los Angeles Neighborhood Council logo competition is now open through May 12, 2009 and we're looking to redefine our image to reflect the qualities of Downtown and the neighborhood we so proudly represent.

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association.
