Ceci Bastida: Ya Me Voy (Music Video) from David Niebla - Director on Vimeo.
Ceci Bastida was born and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. At the age of 15, she joined Tijuana NO as a lead vocalist, keyboardist and songwriter and became one of the first women to rise in the ranks of Latin rock. One of Mexico's most important ska-punk bands of the 1990s, Tijuana NO performed together for 12 years and recorded three albums for BMG: NO, Transgresores de la Ley, and Contra-Revolucion Avenue. In 2000, Ceci joined the band of Mexican alterna-pop icon and top-selling Sony/BMG recording artist Julieta Venegas and has been singing back-up vocals and playing keyboards with her ever since. Ceci is now embarking on her first project as a solo artist. In 2006, she released the critically acclaimed ep FRONT BC and she is now set to release VEO LA MAREA, her full-length debut album-- co-produced by Ceci, The Gifted (Giant Drag, Gran Ronde, Dirty Little Secret) and David Green (Los Abandoned). It's due in 2009. - myspace.com/cecibastida
The Hickoids
Redwood Bar & Grill

Apart from maybe the Groovy Rednecks or Hank III, there aren't any country-rock performers around these days who live it up recklessly and raucously with the same boozy, profane attitude and hell-raisin' abandon as the Hickoids. When they started in 1984, their hardcore thrashing of C&W made a rude dent in an Austin scene that was already populated by such weirdoes as Scratch Acid, Daniel Johnston and the Butthole Surfers. The Hickoids' cowpunk sound might have been inspired by the early Gun Club, but their alcohol-fueled exploits and the defiantly goofy subject matter on their 1985 debut album, We're in it for the Corn, put them more in a league with one of Jeffrey Lee Pierce's other bands, Tex & the Horseheads. Of course, even the wacked-out Horseheads occasionally revealed unexpectedly serious and touchingly soulful emotions, something the Hickoids would never bother to do. A recurring theme involves singer Jeff Smith finding himself in an unfamiliar, embarrassing place after a drunken blackout, which occurs at least twice on the Hickoids' recent reissued 1989 CD, Waltz-a-Cross-Dress-Texas (Saustex), produced by ubiquitous '80s indie producer Spot. "I woke up on the floor in Hollywood, California/and [drummer] Wade Driver was laying there in a dress/and the cops were kicking his ass/And I said, 'You know, down in Texas we know that ain't no way to treat a lady,'" as Smith eloquently explains on the transvestite ode "Queen of the Bar-B-Q." Smith and fellow original guitarist Davy Jones are joined by new members from Haunted Garage, the Tombstones and Bigfoot Chester on this tour, their first to the West Coast since the semi-infamous Fiasco Magnifico jaunt back in 1989. They've also got an upcoming album, Hairy Chafin' Ape Suit, whose title may or may not refer to Harry Chapin. - Falling James, LA Weekly
Hey Joe! Can we crash at your all's place?!

The Neurotics kicked around Detroit in the late 1980s with a straight-ahead, tunefully driving punk & roll sound that drew heavily from the Ramones and the Heartbreakers. But the Motor City's vaunted garage-rock revival was still a decade away, so the group eventually moved to Hollywood, where they stood out for a little while as one of the more authentically rocking bands in a scene then dominated by grunge and metal mercenaries. Drummer Roy Morgan (the Excessories, Nikki Corvette, Kevin K) and lanky singer-guitarist Johnny Neurotic, who resembles the Dils' Tony Kinman and yowls with a coolly insolent sneer, recently started up the trio again with a new bassist, George Wright. Their compact power-punk songs are as catchy as ever, albeit once again out of step with prevailing trends. How good are the Neurotics? Well, they're able to take one of the worst and sappiest Rolling Stones songs, "As Tears Go By," give it some speed and fuzz, and transform it into a viably hooky punk anthem. Even better, though, are such originals as "Not Right Now" and "What Was it Like," which aim for a power-pop melodicism but have so much swarming punk energy, they instead evoke lost Australian bands like the Psycho Surgeons. The Neurotics are billed tonight with simpatico Blondie-influenced New Yorkers the Choke. - Falling James, LA Weekly

Two Sheds || Listen || Watch
Hailing from the Sacramento area, Two Sheds formed in 2003 when John Gutenberger (bass, vocals), Rusty Miller (drums) and Caitlin Gutenberger (guitar, vocals) began playing together for fun. In 2004, Caitlin tried her hand at writing a song at John’s encouragement, and has yet to stop. Their collaboration made them realize their overwhelming natural musical chemistry, and Two Sheds went on to record 2006’s Strange Ammunition on UnderAcloud Records.
Their live shows take a different turn than the recordings. Two Sheds tends to go electric most of the time on tour thanks to the addition of James Finch, Jr. (guitar) in 2007 who helped flesh out the sound the band was able to capture on earlier recordings. This has led Two Sheds to share the stage with artists such as Victoria Wiliams, the Chapin Sisters, the Duke Spirit, Scout Niblett, Akron Family and Be Your Own Pet.
After several tour dates on the West Coast and a talked about performance at SXSW this year at Filter Magazine’s “Showdown at Cedar Street,” the band is touring behind their self-titled EP on Filter U.S. Recordings. The digital-only EP conjures similarities to a vast array of artists — from Mazzy Star to Lucinda Williams, Neil Young to Nirvana. Jason Quever’s one-man (plus guests) band makes blurred-edge music with damp organs, milky guitars, reverbed vocals, and sticky, half-familiar melodies seemingly snatched from some collective unconscious. And the album’s opening couplet, “Once we walked in the sunlight/ Three years ago this July 4th”, sums up Papercuts’ temperamental pitch with tweet-like brevity. Their 2007 LP was titled Can’t Go Back, but as a songwriter Quever can’t help but indulge nostalgia, including its bitter constituents, regret and remorse.
Papercuts, however, aren’t agoraphobic shut-ins exorcising romantic demons and venting life’s inequities. A backward– and inward—looking predilection actually serves the band artistically. Quever crafts his aesthetic from the raw materials of Zombies, Velvet Underground, and Galaxie 500 appreciation, Phil Spector worship, and an indie rock gospel that equates modest ambitions with really, really meaning it. And the Bay Area singer-songwriter has buffed this sound to a rose-colored finish playing in and touring with 60s-rock fetishists Vetiver and pop deconstructionists Beach House and Grizzly Bear– folks who consider musicological context. - Pitchfork

'Voltaic'

Voltaic is a new recording from Bjork, but it's not new material.
You can find it in five different flavors — I'll run through those in a moment — but first, let me talk about the music on Voltaic, the music you can hear on our site. In 2007, there was Volta, a CD of new songs from Bjork. Well, just before Bjork's performance at the Glastonbury Festival in 2007, and before beginning what would be a two-year Volta tour, she and her band went into Olympic Studios in London. There, the group recorded live to tape selections from Medulla, Homogenic, Post, Vespertine and her latest. These performances are what make up Voltaic. - Bob Boilen, NPR - HEAR THE ENTIRE ALBUM AFTER THE JUMP

The Avett Brothers:
Tiny Desk Concert

With all due respect to its terrific albums and kinetic, frenetic live shows, if The Avett Brothers could put on a three-song acoustic concert at every workplace in America, the band would be a world-beating colossus. For proof, take six minutes to don some headphones and listen to "Laundry Room," which opens this set at the desk of All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen.
"Laundry Room" is a highlight of the rootsy, harmony-drenched rock group's forthcoming album I and Love and You, scheduled for release in September. But if that song isn't peeking far enough into the future, the band — Seth Avett on guitar and vocals, Scott Avett on banjo and vocals, Bob Crawford on bass and Joe Kwon on cello — jumps even farther ahead with the as-yet-unrecorded "Down With the Shine." To close the set, the group finally looks backward with a lovely rendering of the ballad "Bella Donna," from last year's The Gleam II EP. - Stephen Thompson, NPR - MORE AFTER THE JUMP

Dirty Projectors: Balancing Head And Heart
By Will Hermes

It's been around 30 years — since the CBGB's era — since New York City has had a really vital rock scene. But they've sure got one now. Albums by Animal Collective and Grizzly Bear have already been flagged as two of this year's best. And I think another adventurous young band with Brooklyn roots, Dirty Projectors, has made a third.
An experimental rock group with a shifting lineup, led by recent Yale graduate David Longstreth, Dirty Projectors can be playfully high-concept; the band has made a song cycle whose storyline somehow involves Eagles singer Don Henley and a highly abstracted remake of the LP Rise Above by the '80s punk rockers in Black Flag. But Bitte Orca — the band's latest release, so named because Dirty Projectors liked the sound of it — is more straightforward. It focuses on the mixed male and female voices of the band members. While parts are influenced by modern R&B, the arrangements are far different. The single "Stillness Is the Move," for example, strikes me as a bit like Destiny's Child teaming up with Talking Heads.
First Listen: Regina Spektor, 'Far'
By Bob Boilen

Regina Spektor writes music just for me. Well, okay, maybe for you, too. But when I listen to her music, it sure seems as if she's singing in my ear and telling me stories filled with poetic twists and turns that are provocative, and that hang in my thoughts like a good melody.
No one laughs at God / When their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake / No one's laughing at God / When they see the one they love, hand in hand with someone else / And they hope that they're mistaken — "Laughing With"
Those are lines from Spektor's new record, Far, which uses four different producers in multiple locations. That sort of thing can make a record a mess, but that didn't happen with Far. Her work with Jeff Lynne (ELO, The Traveling Wilburys), David Kahne (Paul McCartney, The Strokes), Garret "Jacknife" Lee (R.E.M., Weezer) and Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem) is cohesive and sharp. And, though there are different production styles on the record, they never overwhelm the melodies or the delightful lilt and phrasing that makes a Regina Spektor song what it is. These are songs that can feel as much akin to Ella Fitzgerald as they do to Bjork, and as much akin to Paul McCartney as they do to Edith Piaf.
This is a record worth putting on repeat. Far feels simple on its surface, but the secrets and the fun lie just underneath. I'd love to hear your thoughts in our comments section below. - LISTEN TO THE ALBUM AFTER THE JUMP

Multifaceted artist
Frohawk Two Feathers
Innovators '09
Frohawk Two Feathers is a man at the nexus of many truths. On one hand, he’s an alchemist of visual art who turns dull history into golden narratives rich with beautiful subversion. On the other, he’s a performance artist who experiments with music, poetry and alter egos, including the psychedelic sexpot Kent Cyclone. Then there’s Umar Rashid, the mastermind behind it all who percolates the creativity that keeps his many artistic endeavors running.
As a visual artist, the Lincoln Heights resident creates evocative illustrations and paintings of fictional aristocrats that take stylistic cues from post-colonial era portraiture. These colorful works -- which glean the outsider-art aesthetic of murals and public art -- explore the intricacies of race, the malleability of class and the fragility of how history is constructed. Although his characters are fictional -- some are absurd inhabitants of the imagined country of Frengland -- they are abstractions of a real ruling class that present a visual dialogue between the oppressor and the oppressed. - MORE AFTER THE JUMP
Rarely can a film penetrate the glamorous surface of rock legends. It Might Get Loud tells the personal stories, in their own words, of three generations of electric guitar virtuosos – The Edge (U2), Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), and Jack White (The White Stripes). It reveals how each developed his unique sound and style of playing favorite instruments, guitars both found and invented. Concentrating on the artist’s musical rebellion, traveling with him to influential locations, provoking rare discussion as to how and why he writes and plays, this film lets you witness intimate moments and hear new music from each artist. The movie revolves around a day when Jimmy Page, Jack White, and The Edge first met and sat down together to share their stories, teach and play.

UK Street Artist Banksy’s New Exhibition
by Paul Larn

Whether you love or hate his creations, it can’t be denied that UK-born artist Banksy is etching his name into a modern pop culture anti-hero.
His street art and graffiti creations have been seen all over the world, he has a highly successful alternative portfolio book, and he has made a considerable amount of money from his more consumable pieces - Brad Pitt reportedly has spent more than $2 million on his work in 2006, 2007 and 2008, and some of the early original pieces he bought are now thought to have doubled or even trebled in estimated value.
Banksy hit national headlines again today when a super-secret exhibition with brand new creations was unveiled at the City Museum and Art Gallery in Bristol. Check out some of the photos below for a look at the kind of work he has on display, and then head on over to the BBC for much more information and a video of some of the most elaborate work featured. - MORE AFTER THE JUMP
Theresa Andersson
One-Woman Wall Of Sound
By Rita Houston

Theresa Andersson is a one-woman band, and this was never more apparent than when she strolled into the WFUV studios with no band members, but two engineers — most solo artists don't travel with any. When I booked the interview back in the early part of this year, it was because I had seen her on YouTube where she had recorded a live version of her song "Na, Na, Na" in her kitchen. The video went viral and her kitchen became famous.
Andersson's new album, Hummingbird, Go! seemed to go back to the "wall of sound" era with a full band and all the trimmings, and yet here she was by herself, surrounded by drums, tons of floor pedals, slide steel guitar and a guitar on her back, and playing them all while singing. I thought I was good at multi-tasking, but this was a whole other level. - MORE AFTER THE JUMP

If a handful of filmmakers get their way, they'll soon convince audiences the real Birth of the Cool predated punk music, the Summer of Love or even Elvis. Yes, the Beats are making a comeback in a spate of movies that summon the spirits of Jack Kerouac, Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs.
These writers and other key figures of the Beat Generation play prominent roles in three upcoming movies: "Howl," a narrative film from documentarians Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman ("The Times of Harvey Milk"); "Kill Your Darlings" from Christine Vachon's Killer Films; and what could turn out to be the ultimate road movie: the long-awaited adaptation of Kerouac's "On the Road," by Walter Salles and Jose Rivera, the director and screenwriter behind "The Motorcycle Diaries." - MORE AFTER THE JUMP

NPR.org, June 9, 2009 - Gentleman Jesse and His Men come from Atlanta's underground rock scene, which has spawned the buzzed-about likes of Deerhunter, Black Lips and The Coathangers. But unlike those acts, which often experiment with sound and cryptic or cheeky lyricism, Gentleman Jesse isn't trying to reinvent the guitar solo. Instead, the band's music offers up simple, infectious harmonies and sing-along choruses. Trouble in paradise?! ROCK INSIDER posting:

From Pehrspace:
Hi Everyone,
Pehrspace has been receiving noise complaints from neighbors these past few weeks and Officer Ford (via Eric Garcetti's office) visited us last Friday to give us a very polite, but stern, warning about controlling our sound levels for our shows. With the addition of L'Keg to the neighborhood (we welcome the company!), our neighbors are experiencing a new wave of sound intrusion into their homes and extra people in the streets so their patience is probably wearing as thin as it did when we first opened three years ago.
pehrspace experienced our first police shutdown this past weekend (sorry Officer Ford) and, a few weeks back, one of our promoters received a complaint directly from a neighbor during one of our weekday shows. As a result, we will be relocating all of our weekday shows to other spaces with the same DIY mindset and outside promoters will no longer be able to host events at the space unless one of us directly associated with pehrspace is present that particular night. This will take effect immediately and last until our neighborhood status is in good standing once again. Sean Carnage has received several offers to relocate his Monday night show. He will be at Women (1852 Crenshaw Blvd.) tonight.
We will continue to host shows and events on Fridays and Saturdays with heightened awareness for noise levels in the parking lot and within the space. Recently, both L'Keg and pehrspace have been working with Eric Garcetti's office to obtain permits for future (and sorta exciting) big events so we are asking our contacts at the office how to ameliorate our neighbors' view of the spaces. Just ONE more noise complaint can shut us down.
Officer Ford has noted and appreciated our efforts to soundproof pehrspace and it works really well, but absolute soundproofing isn't effective when our doors are left open or if the music is unusually loud during a performance. We have also been pretty laidback about parking lot/outside noise and this may have added to our neighbors' annoyance.
Please, if you or your friends attend any shows at both venues, be aware of your noise levels when walking through the neighborhood and when you're outside of our spaces. It's simple, respect our neighbors. If you notice any wild behavior, let us know and we'll take care of the situation. We really enjoy the spirit of our events and the community that we've built together throughout the years--it would be a shame to have to stop because of those few who lack awareness and respect for others.
Thanks,
Pehrspace
p.s. please spread the word. thank you.

Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band's
'Outer South'

NPR.org - When Conor Oberst hit the road last year in support of his eponymous solo debut, he took with him a group of close, longtime friends he dubbed The Mystic Valley Band. The group of half a dozen musicians had helped Oberst record his country-flavored album in Tepoztlan, Mexico's Valle Mistico in early 2008. While on tour, Oberst and members of the band continued to write and share songs with one another, eager to capture the energy of their live performances. By the end of 2008, Oberst and The Mystic Valley Band had enough material for a second album, and entered a studio in Tornillo, Texas, to lay down 16 new tracks. The album they came up with, Outer South, won't be released until May 5, but you can hear it in its entirety on NPR Music as an Exclusive First Listen. CLICK ON THE IMAGE ABOVE.
DENGUE FEVER
Sleepwalking Through the Mekong follows Los Angeles based band Dengue Fever on their recent journey to Cambodia to perform 60s and 70s Cambodian rock n' roll in the country where it was created and very nearly destroyed. The odyssey is a homecoming for singer Chhom Nimol and a transformation for the rest of the band as they perform with master musicians and record new songs along the way.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
