Truly out-of-sight, the seven-piece band celebrates the outlaw spirit with spooky, tripped-out variations on Ennio Morricone’s spaghetti Western tradition. Live, they swirl and tremble like a lucid dream, banging a gong and shaking their tambourines for rattlesnake effect, jamming until the audience feels engulfed by a sandstorm (of course, it helps if it’s an outdoor concert and the wind is already fierce). Spindrift founder Kirpatrick Thomas (who holds together portions of the band’s East and West Coast factions) recently recorded a soundtrack to Mike Bruce’s bizarre concept film Legend of God’s Gun, which is like the original Ocean’s 11 with psychedelic rockers replacing tony rat packers. Visually schizophrenic, Gun follows a preacher turned gunslinger who travels to Playa Diablo to avenge his true love’s death. Trippy shoot-’em-ups ensue. Go west! - Salt Lake City Weekly

DOWNTOWN FILM FESTIVAL

According to local legend (and pictorial evidence), Downtown Los Angeles was once a vibrant metropolis overflowing with entertainment, culture, and men wearing hats. Now, after decades of skyscraper-building and sci-fi dystopianism, Downtown is back (sans hats), and the organizers of the Silver Lake Film Festival are celebrating that resurgence with the inaugural Downtown Film Festival. MOCA, SCI-Arc, and the historic Los Angeles and Orpheum theaters (as well as other venues) host films before the event culminates Sunday night with an outdoor screening of water documentary and 2008 Sundance favorite Flow at California Plaza.

Three live music stages provide much of the energy, where local heroes like Mike Watt, Extra Fancy and Candye Kane perform back-to-back sets. Midway rides and an open-air disco add to the fun. Of course vendors are in on the action, with more than 200 booths offering everything from tamales to Greenpeace literature.
