The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.
While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO

Club Moscow feat. Jason Eldredge, Love Grenades, and Casxio
Jason Eldredge (of KCRW) and Jeremy Wineberg (of Invisible DJ Records) have iPod playlists most of us can only dream of. They also share a taste for global, forward-leaning productions rife with linguistic gymnastics and uptempo soul. Thank the beat gods the two have deigned to give us an auditory peek at some of those tracks on their new CD, Accidental Rhythm, as part of tonight's release party. Club Moscow's usual home at Boardner's is occupied with a film shoot tonight, but not to worry: it's Safari Sam's to the rescue with an offer to host the beat brigades. Posh local act Love Grenades keep the alien dance party going with their breathless disco nova, while Casxio modernize Sly & the Family Stone-style funk. – Shana Nys Dambrot
Indie 103 presents CLUB NME with BLACK FRANCIS / THE BLOOD ARM / BLACK GOLD @ Spaceland - WEDNESDAY August 20
Black Francis [Listen] [Watch]
Lasting only slightly longer than 20 minutes, Svn Fngrs is a joyously lo-fi collection of songs which proves that even his most unrefined efforts have nuggets of purest genius in them. The closer, ‘When They Come To Murder Me’ is a throbbing beast of Americana, all relentless driving drums and a chorus that, although it never hangs around for long enough to get boring. “I was born in a double orgasm,” he grunts, as if to affirm his status as a permanent outsider almost from birth. And, while he’s obviously never fitted flush with any so-called traditional ideas of what is and isn’t pop/rock star, the point is that Black’s still around and still making music better than most of the young bucks out there. It’s a joyous celebration of the fact that he’s been a step ahead of the pack probably since the inception of That Other Band – “When they come to murder me / I’m already gone, bye-bye,” he drawls. Sorry chaps, you won’t catch him.- Drowned in Sound

LA WEEKLY PRESENTS THE GERMS / THE MAE SHI / SPIDER PROBLEM @ ECHO
The Germs [Listen]
The “new Germs” have toured semi-regularly since 2005, including a run on the 2006 Vans Warped Tour and playing the “Secret” premiere in June. Fans and some punk peers initially derided the reunion, believing it to be either a nostalgic cash-in or a reputation-sullying mistake. But those aghast by Landon from “A Walk to Remember” donning Crash’s blue-circle armband, are realizing that West’s spit-soaked reprisals of his Crash role are faithful and riveting, right down to West’s spitfire rebuttals to skeptics.“If you sit home moaning about the past and haven’t seen us play, then you can go to hell,” West said. “I wasn’t going to mess with Darby’s songs or change his singing style. I wasn’t going to be sober doing lounge-jazz either.”In a way, the Germs’ sets are more live theater than reunion tour, and less of a post-mortem hit parade than a chance for a younger generation to feel the gleeful fury and bleak sadness of the ’80s L.A. punk scene for themselves.“There is a level of chaos, mischief and danger to it, but it’s fun and done in the original spirit,” said West. “We try and show them what a real punk rock show should be.” - LA Times

Spider Problem
Three live music stages provide much of the energy, where local heroes like Mike Watt, Extra Fancy and Candye Kane perform back-to-back sets. Midway rides and an open-air disco add to the fun. Of course vendors are in on the action, with more than 200 booths offering everything from tamales to Greenpeace literature.
