Playing with Porterville:
“The band's influences range from Prince to Pavement. Fine Street (featured in the film Fever Pitch) combines the stalker terror of Silence of the Lambs’ Buffalo Bill with the dance-rock beat of Talking Heads. The music of The Who and the poetry of Walt Whitman inspire the epic Apollo Says. Overfloatin’ echoes the heart-on-sleeve vulnerability of Lloyd Dobler from Say Anything, joined with a wall-of-sound worthy of Bowie’s Heroes.” -From Bio

AFI'S DIRECTING WORKSHOP FOR WOMEN SHOWCASE
Featuring films from the 2007 Directing Workshop for Women
MONDAY, MAY 12, 2008 at 7:30p.m.
HARMONY GOLD THEATER, 7655 Sunset Blvd.
AFTER PARTY immediately follows.

With a penchant for shimmering feedback and reverb-drenched arrangements, Film School are adherents to the late-'80s/early-'90s shoegaze tradition. Although some find the band's pitch-perfect homage to acts like the Swirlies and My Bloody Valentine overly academic, it is precisely its close study of the genre's beau ideal (and addition of dream-pop flourishes, such as string and keyboard lines) that makes the performances so transfixing. Onstage, the quintet's ethereal vocals, gossamer melodies, and furiously loud guitars coalesce into an indistinguishable swirl of sound that rivals Kevin Shields' most gorgeous rackets. Tonight, Film School return in continued support of their third album, 2007's Hideout. - Suzanne Niemoth
