Rademacher [Watch]
Exhibit A is a non-album demo exclusive, “What Happened to Yr Friends,” that displays Rademacher’s breadth as they craft a truly earnest and epic track. Meanwhile, Stunts sample “If U Got Some Magic” displays an astute wit when asking, “If you know the city, then why can’t you find a place to get your hair cut?” Notice the growth without surrender. In both tracks, what’s clear is the consistency with which the expertly slack songs stay gritty without sacrificing tune or tightness. Poppy without being overly perky, these Cali boys aren’t all sunshine — check the almost-Arcade Fire apocalyptic piano slams on “Magic” or the echo and feedback haunting “Friends.” Still, the hooks and melodies catch unexpectedly, like walking into that near-invisible spider web, as frontman Malcolm Sosa’s tender falsetto harmonies creep up from behind during the frailest moments of “Friends.”

Mike Stinson
The Redwood Bar and Grill

"Virginian Mike Stinson's vibrant take on old-school honky tonk music has made him perhaps the leading L.A. light of the moment...he's a formidable songsmith..." Chris Morris -- Billboard Magazine
Jolie Holland w/ Herman Dune
The Troubadour

Jolie Holland's songs are at once old and new — too freaky for blues, too jazzy for folk, and too punky for country. The title track from the singer's last record, Springtime Can Kill You (on Tom Waits' Anti- label), begins as a loosey-goosey jazz waltz, but carefully lowers itself into an odd whistling-and-tuba refrain like an evil bath-time ritual. As captivating as the songs may be, their composer's voice is the real star (think Joanna Newsom with a little Billie Holiday in her throat). Her penchant for near-constant melisma can be hard to follow, but Holland's inscrutability is always soulfully matched by her delivery.

Nina Paley: Sita Sings the Blues
Redcat

From a profound dharmic confluence comes Sita Sings the Blues, a breathtaking new animated film by cartoonist Nina Paley. As her comic-world fame and interest in low-fi cinema grew, Paley found herself first living in India, then in NYC in a post-divorce hell, when her personal challenges dovetailed into an inspired whole. Having already been absorbed in the art and literature of India — in particular Rama and Sita's epic love story in the ancient Ramayana — Paley discovered parallels in the sultry jazz of flapper icon Annette Hanshaw. Separated by centuries, the passions of these women take up a common cause in this haunting celebration of love's transformative power.
– Shana Nys Dambrot
"Nina Paley’s delightfully subversive feminist musical version of the Ramayana constitutes an irrefutable argument for classic 2-D animation as a viable, vibrant low-budget arthouse medium for adults."

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
