SHILOE Record Release Party /
THE PACIFIC / LOVE’S LIKE SMOKE / KISSING COUSINS
Spaceland

Shiloe || [Listen] || [Watch]

Shiloe started off the evening with a sound heavily influenced by the Pixies mixed with some Sonic Youth. Ken Ramos (Vocals/Guitar) had a vocal delivery that resembled Thurston Moore and was squeezing a sharp fuzz from his Gibson SG. Melissa Pleckham (Bass) had a Rickenbacker bass that was filling the room with low notes. Their latest release is “Please Remove Your Teeth From My Neck” which you can download from itunes. I will have to check them out again.

Monster Drawing Rally
Outpost for Contemporary Art

To help in its mission of connecting artists with new audiences, the nonprofit Outpost for Contemporary Art raises some funds at the annual Monster Drawing Rally. The main attraction for attendees is the chance to watch 100 artists create their works live — a rare opportunity to witness a creative process that's usually performed in isolation. Separated into four one-hour shifts, 20 artists draw at once, with each finished product up for sale at just $75. Along with the art, there's a variety show that includes performance, music, and some Egyptian-inspired dance moves.

On Friday, the city's cultural institutions stay open late to kick off Pasadena Art Weekend. A free shuttle circulates from one spot to the next, making a trip around ritzy Pasadena feel like a hop from dorm to dorm on a Thursday night at CalArts. Saturday, the fun rolls on with ArtWalk 2008 and the Latino Heritage parade, while Sunday's ArtMarket lets you snap up works by students from the Art Center College of Design. If you're all arted out by this time, cruise into Old Town to see musical acts such as West Indian Girl, Very Be Careful, and Faro on the KCRW stage.

In a world rife with indie film festivals (that's a good thing), this annual weekend juggernaut of alt-culture cinema, music, and art is refreshing because it shows you a different side of a familiar place, the always-unpredictable Venice Beach. From special screenings of reels by name-brand locals such as Catherine Hardwicke to scores of quickies and features by emerging talents, the weekend is short-attention-span heaven for any fan of moving pictures. And it's Venice, so you're never far from the beach scene, haute cuisine, and epic people-watching.

[Previously: Intro, Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4.]

Dear Friends and Family,

Just a small note to let you know that I am writing a tour blog for the next three months while I am traveling and playing with M83 throughout Europe and the US. The blog will be hosted by Kevin Bronson who was a senior music writer and editor for the LA Times. I am thrilled and honored that he asked me to do this. Should you have the time and the inclination to check it out, the link is as follows:

BUZZ BANDS

I hope this email finds you all healthy and happy, and hopefully i will see you while I'm on the road.

Lots of love,

Morgan

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!

¡¡¡ MARK YOUR CALENDARS !!!

Cult animator and Academy Award nominee Don Hertzfeldt ("the Meaning of Life", "Rejected", "Billy's Balloon") is hitting the road this fall for a rare series of one-night-only events! A selection of Don's classic animated shorts return to the big screen, culminating in the exclusive regional premiere of his brand new film, "I am so proud of you". His longest piece to date, "I am so proud of you" is the eagerly anticipated second chapter to "Everything will be OK", winner of the Sundance Film Festival's Jury Award in Short Filmmaking and named by many critics as one of the "best films of 2007". Every screening will be immediately followed by a live on-stage interview and audience Q+A with Don Hertzfeldt.
