Atomic Sherpas
Taix

"The Atomic Sherpas are awesome mofos who can play anything, from the nimbly dizzy and jazzy horns of "Clockwise" and Vince Meghrouni's mad flute melody of "50 Yds. Sprechenzie Bebop" to the pumpin' roadhouse blues of "You Know It Ain't Right," which is located in the electric-blues universe somewhere between the Sheiks of Shake and vintage Top Jimmy & the Rhythm Pigs. These cats write their own tunes, but they have no problem shifting easily into tight, heavy-funk James Brown workouts"

Quintron & Miss Pussycat [Listen]
Quintron and Miss Pussycat exemplify the idea that a self-made world is the only place to live: He’s the Mad Max of one-man bands, usually dressed in a thin sharkskin suit with an organ that’s outfitted with a muscle car grill, colored lights pulsing like fireworks around him. He occasionally turns to his homemade secret weapon, the Drum Buddy, a wood-encased oscillating drum machine based on the principles of a Theremin. Laurie Anderson and Nels Cline have purchased updated copies of the instrument. The bright-eyed Miss Pussycat dresses in hand-stitched outfits that are part Kitty Wells, part pop art. She reigns over a puppet kingdom that rivals Sid and Marty Krofft’s rainbow imaginations.
The pair’s unflagging spirit wants to have fun, to party, to do what they do best in New Orleans, especially at funerals: to celebrate. For Quintron, that means dirty, bump ‘n’ grinders like “Swamp Buggy Badass” or the funky, somewhat foretelling song he wrote before Katrina, “Ninth Ward Breakdown.” It’s what makes Mardi Gras more than some rich people tossing junk into crowds, and what makes New Orleans just as weird and wonderful as ever before, tragedy or no.

Sunn O))) w/ John Weise and Eagle Twin
Safari Sams

Named after a rare amplifier favored by the Melvins, Sunn O))) play impossibly loud drone metal. The duo dons black robes, cranks up its equipment, and patiently builds through a series of tones until a claustrophobically dense sound fills the room. Although "heavy" is still their guiding criterion, Sunn O))) disregard all expectations of what metal should sound like, taking inspiration from minimalists like Phillip Glass and John Cage while maintaining metal's visual stereotypes and sonic palette. The end result is as much rock show as dark ritual.

Ekundayo & Johnny "KMNDZ" Rodriguez:
Red Forest
Thinkspace

Hot off the success of their individual Thinkspace exhibitions, Ekundayo and Johnny "KMNDZ" Rodriguez join forces for their first-ever collaborative collection at their favorite Silverlake gallery. Named for the "most radioactive place on Earth," Ekundayo and Rodriguez's Red Forest features paintings that focus on man and his many vices, comparing the effects of nuclear power plants to the effects of drugs, alcohol, and general debauchery.

On Friday, the city's cultural institutions stay open late to kick off Pasadena Art Weekend. A free shuttle circulates from one spot to the next, making a trip around ritzy Pasadena feel like a hop from dorm to dorm on a Thursday night at CalArts. Saturday, the fun rolls on with ArtWalk 2008 and the Latino Heritage parade, while Sunday's ArtMarket lets you snap up works by students from the Art Center College of Design. If you're all arted out by this time, cruise into Old Town to see musical acts such as West Indian Girl, Very Be Careful, and Faro on the KCRW stage.

In a world rife with indie film festivals (that's a good thing), this annual weekend juggernaut of alt-culture cinema, music, and art is refreshing because it shows you a different side of a familiar place, the always-unpredictable Venice Beach. From special screenings of reels by name-brand locals such as Catherine Hardwicke to scores of quickies and features by emerging talents, the weekend is short-attention-span heaven for any fan of moving pictures. And it's Venice, so you're never far from the beach scene, haute cuisine, and epic people-watching.

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
