Kenan Bell [Listen] [Watch]

Kenan Bell, who was impressive at his release show back in March but still would be considered a work in progress, has seemingly exploded overnight with a band of familiar faces (Monsters Are Waiting, Dynamite Walls, and on this night Josh Klinghoffer and John Frusciante). Spaceland must have been pleased to see the band draw such a good midnight crowd — they’re scheduled to be the resident band in October.- LA Underground

LA hip-hop has always been a little different — even gangsta rap had a funky-free feel that New York couldn't touch. These days, the West Coast has successfully found the intersection between indie punks and hip-hop heads: MC Kenan Bell. The young'un in the Chucks and plaid lays down a clever emo-flow over tracks by the Smiths and MGMT, and spends his daylight hours teaching grammar at a private Montessori middle school. Tonight, Bell begins a month-long Spaceland residency, sharing the stage with UK folk-rockers Noah and the Whale while simultaneously ringing in a new era of hip-hop. – Chloe Leichman

THE BROKEN REMOTES
Echo

Rademacher [Watch]

Exhibit A is a non-album demo exclusive, “What Happened to Yr Friends,” that displays Rademacher’s breadth as they craft a truly earnest and epic track. Meanwhile, Stunts sample “If U Got Some Magic” displays an astute wit when asking, “If you know the city, then why can’t you find a place to get your hair cut?” Notice the growth without surrender. In both tracks, what’s clear is the consistency with which the expertly slack songs stay gritty without sacrificing tune or tightness. Poppy without being overly perky, these Cali boys aren’t all sunshine — check the almost-Arcade Fire apocalyptic piano slams on “Magic” or the echo and feedback haunting “Friends.” Still, the hooks and melodies catch unexpectedly, like walking into that near-invisible spider web, as frontman Malcolm Sosa’s tender falsetto harmonies creep up from behind during the frailest moments of “Friends.” - Spin.com

Manhattan Murder Mystery are three musicians tried and convicted for the murders of three children in the Robin Hood Hills area of West Memphis, Arkansas, United States in 1993. Matthew Teardrop - the alleged ringleader - was sentenced to death. Laura and Soledad were sentenced to life in prison. The case has received considerable attention. Many believe the arrests and convictions were a miscarriage of justice and that the defendants were wrongfully convicted during a period of intense media scrutiny and so-called "Satanic panic".
