The Eagle Rock Music Festival announced their line-up this week over 50 artists including locals such as Abe Vigoda, Crystal Antlers, The Flying Tourbillion Orchestra, Le Switch, Light FM, Pizza!, Radar Brothers and Upsilon Acrux (full list here).
The 10th annual Eagle Rock Music Festival puts the east side neighborhood's ever-burgeoning arts scene on display. Live outdoor sets along Colorado Blvd by local favorites Earlimart, Light FM, Stab City, Pierre De Reeder (of Rilo Kiley), and Abe Vigoda (the band) give Detour, the festival's more chaotic, pricier competition, a run for its money. In between sets, give your ears a time out and give your eyes a treat as the nearby Center's gallery hosts Ebbs & Flows: Sea Change and the Family Gathering, a group show of Latino artists curated by Steve Irvin. The exhibition subverts the idea of ethnicity as a prism through which to view art; instead, it privileges more universal themes of community life.

Subliminal Projects celebrate their move to Echo Park with the appropriately titled show, Park Life. Eastside represent. RSVP to maria@studionumber-one.com.
Subliminal Projects uses its recent move from Koreatown to the more pastoral environs of Echo Park as the curatorial focus for its latest exhibition, Park Life. Studio Number One, the art/design-oriented arm of the Shepard Fairey-run Subliminal family, focuses on the idea of community during an ongoing project, the first leg of which includes this show featuring artists close to the curators. Expect an eclectic but consistently invigorating array of outsider styles with urban accents and strongly held political views, plus some cheeky celebrations of togetherness by the usual Eastside suspects.

Christopher Pate: Flyover
JAIL Gallery

Christopher Pate is interested in the relationship between maps and landscapes, as well as the broader discourse between the real quality of a place and the idea of it. A perfect example is the notion of "flyover states," the vast swath of America between the glimmering poles of NYC and LA — coastal residents likely perceive these states in a way that locals disagree with. Pate uses these memes as the armature for a mixed-media series that incorporates found road and topographical maps, elements of drawing and painting, and vintage souvenir textiles rife with vernacular symbols. The result is a visually dynamic choreography that deconstructs representations of place and makes us question our own perspective.

Bootie LA
Echoplex

Born in San Francisco and spreading to LA is Bootie, the party that drops genre-crossing mashups all night long. The shindig is arguably responsible for carving out an entirely unique style of music in which '80s hits, hip-hop beats, and hard-rock riffs melt into each other to create a whole new level of groove. The monthly Bootie LA features resident selectors in the form of legendary mashup DJ Paul V. as well as cosmopolitan couple Adrian and Mysterious D. This month's installment welcomes special guests Lady Tigra and DJ Shyboy.
TARFEST
La Brea Tar Pits

TarFest is a festival of emerging film, music and art held annually since 2003 at the La Brea Tar Pits and the surrounding Museum Row in the historic Miracle Mile district of Los Angeles.
This popular festival presents an opportunity for artists in Los Angeles to gain creative exposure in the geographical and cultural center of the city for the benefit of public enrichment. A four-day indoor/outdoor multi-venue festival, TarFest features concerts, film screenings, arts workshops, installations, sculptures, paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media, and informational lectures.
The diverse programming appeals to all types of people at all levels, encouraging Los Angelenos to explore excellent, unique forms of expression and aesthetics in the heart of the city. - TF Site
Not since the landmark Flintstones road-trip episode have the La Brea Tar Pits seen so much action. Occupying several venues along the Wilshire Blvd corridor between La Brea and Fairfax, this year's TarFest features new visual art at the Korean Cultural Center on Friday (curated by Howard Fox of LACMA) and film on Saturday afternoon. Indie-pop and rock bands hit the El Rey on Saturday night, and there is a Sunday-morning road race for anyone still standing. Now in its sixth year, TarFest remains a free, fresh, and eclectic love letter to Los Angeles.
