Some music I brought back from Seattle...

Husbands, love your wives

Here's some great SXSW stuff I got into today...

The Austin 100: A SXSW Mix

NPR.org - In preparation for the 2009 South by Southwest music festival (March 18-21), NPR Music's spent weeks sampling songs by more than 1,000 of the acts in attendance. Some of the music induced swooning, some of it induced sleepiness, and some of it made us want to pry out our eardrums and swallow them for safe keeping. (We're looking at you, Gaybomb.) Arranged alphabetically by artist, the 100 songs in this ridiculously bountiful — but by no means definitive — mix all passed a simple litmus test, summed up in six simple words: "Yeah, I'd listen to that again." Larytta || Listen || Watch

Offbeat, off-kilter, and for the most part off their rockers, Swiss tandem Larytta are making trouble in the best of ways. The phrases ‘degenerate-rock,’ ‘ESLectro,’ and ‘exchange-student afro-pop’ readily come to mind. For an electronic head locked in the basement, this is an uncomfortable breath of fresh air, goose bump material that leaves you looking back over your shoulder to see if someone is watching. Taking the impossibility out of contradiction, Difficult Fun is the best of tests. Like your calculus teacher handing out a problem set of brain-teasers and optical illusions, Larytta challenges you to take a leap outside of comfy confines and expand your notion of what music-making is and can be. - Tiny Mix Tapes

GREAT NORTHERN
Great Northern's new album 'Remind Me Where the Light Is' is the work of a now seasoned band, one that's been on the road for months (with Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids, Ladytron, Fiery Furnaces), missed home, seen the world, and returned. "We took a lot of risks entering uncomfortable territory not touched on the last record," Bixler says, "we dug deeper into the unpleasant, which helped us to find the beauty."

O + S
A new project by Orenda Fink (Azure Ray, Art In Manila) and Cedric LeMoyne aka Scalpelist (Remy Zero). Orenda and Scalpelist, long-time friends from their shared hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, have created a record that combines the haunting, ethereal music of a David Lynch soundtrack with the cinematic art-pop of 10cc. Look for a March release of O + S's debut album on Saddle Creek Records.

Nico Stai || Watch || MP3

What is in a name, like the one possessed by Nico Stai? Nico is an L.A. based musician and his new release, his 3rd in all, The Victory Of Miss Friday is his most decisive to date. The trappings of creating records has not affected Nico as it is apparent on his newest creation. The music is entrapping, grabbing your brain cells and lulling you into a beautiful stupor. Bob Dylan, you have company now …., someone who can create a stunningly simple acoustic piece and reign in a legion of fans, but with consumer friendly smooth vocals. The music on The Victory Of Miss Friday has engaging rhythms like with in the track “Scream,” which has ensnaring vocals of the pleasant and hypnotic gesture along with driving acoustic rhythms and above all, horns. Any artist that incorporates horns into their music is my hero. “The Skies Over Your Head” offers something different, a strumming bass line behind the acoustic guitar with Nico’s urging vocals lying overhead. Dead Pony was an advancement for Nico but this is the just deserts. Stunning acoustic movements with frantic moments here and there are Nico’s calling card. Go check them out and make Nico Stai your next musical love. Check him out this March at for his Monday night residency at Spaceland. -Jeffrey Easton

Wait.Think.Fast.

Wait Think Fast is one of the current standouts in a burgeoning scene of ethnically and musically diverse Los Angeles-based bands. Fronted by Argentinean-born vocalist and pianist Jacqueline Santillan, the quartet adds distinct flavor to its atmospheric, post-punk sound by using both Spanish and English for its bilingual lyrics. Wait Think Fast released a self-titled debut EP last year, and it’s recently followed it up with the 7-song Vuelve al Mar, on L.A.’s Origami Records. - NPR

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
