TRADITIONIST
This aptly titled record of Joey Barro was created with the collaboration of long time friend, touring companion, and now producer Tim Bluhm (Mother Hips). Originally meant to be the next record from The Antiques, Barro’s long time band, this departure that was realized through open experimentation became an entirely new project, and thus The Traditionist was born.

SO MANY WIZARDS
“The band is sheer madness on stage, complete with a visual performance in the background. Although madness does not always come along with some element of genius, So Many Wizards has it. And it has it in abundance. It is a blend of dedication, passion and killer music that travels with its own group of fans cheering them on every step of the way. Their music is embodied by the fierceness of their lead singer and leader whose voice will echo within you long after their set is finished.” - Loudvine

And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead || Listen || Watch

…And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead is putting the finishing touches on its sixth album in New York with producer Chris Coady. The as-yet-untitled set is due in January via the band’s own Richter Scale label through the Universal-distributed Justice Records. An EP, “Festival Time,” will precede the album in October. In addition to the title track, it will feature an unconventional cover of the Replacements’ “Within Your Reach” as well as the instrumental “The Betrayal of Roger Caseman and the Irish Brigade” and the dark, riffy “Bells of Creation,” which will appear on the album in a different form… The material previewed for Billboard is indeed more hard-hitting than on the past two Interscope albums, with “Inland Sea” building from a measured, midtempo rocker to a furious instrumental finish and the snappy “Fields of Coal” conjuring an inspirational chorus that Reece says reminds him of the Summer Olypmics. Another untitled track is fast and punky, with an Unwound-style feedback barrage. - Billboard

LADYHAWKE
JEPPE

Troubadour

Pip Brown started playing guitar for rockers Two Lane Blacktop in 2001, then moved on to the hormone-crazed electronica duo Teenager with Pnau's Nick Littlemore – together, those experiences gave Brown a peanut-butter-in-my-chocolate revelation before finally getting it right in her fully-formed project, Ladyhawke. The rock-fused dance pop, big on synth riffs, theatrical '80s affectation and sexual suggestion, is the musical equivalent to a sweaty pillow fight in those shiny American Apparel tights. Ladyhawke's really packing venues in the U.K., but Americans aren't as apt to swallow her easy, candy-coated '80s shtick. Brits know better: It's more fun to give in to Ms. Brown's bravura. With her kick-in-the-balls delivery and her Stevie Nicks-meets-Debbie Gibson looks, Ladyhawke may still sound tame enough for airplay on KCRW, and Christina Aguilera may cover Pip Brown's songs (the track "My Delirium" will be featured on her new album), but you can be sure, after this show, you'll be proud to scribble "Ladyhawke" across your math folder without shame. - Wendy Gilmartin, LA Weekly

Ollin || Listen

What better way to spend St. Patrick’s Day than with a Latino punk band that plays songs written by a bona fide Irish alcoholic? Acclaimed for covering the Pogues’ Rum, Sodomy & the Lash in its entirety, Ollin always packs the house full of sweaty drunks just raring to holler along to “The Sick Bed of Cúchulainn.” Enjoy the energy of that album (played in full tonight), and watch as the band inspires sobs with their version of the traditional anti-war ballad “The Band Played Waltzing Matilda.” - Flavorpill

Some music I brought back from Seattle...

Here's some great SXSW stuff I got into today...

The Austin 100: A SXSW Mix

NPR.org - In preparation for the 2009 South by Southwest music festival (March 18-21), NPR Music's spent weeks sampling songs by more than 1,000 of the acts in attendance. Some of the music induced swooning, some of it induced sleepiness, and some of it made us want to pry out our eardrums and swallow them for safe keeping. (We're looking at you, Gaybomb.) Arranged alphabetically by artist, the 100 songs in this ridiculously bountiful — but by no means definitive — mix all passed a simple litmus test, summed up in six simple words: "Yeah, I'd listen to that again." Silver Lake Neighborhood Council Says Sunset Junction Needs an Overhaul

[...]Ultimately, the Board voted unanimously in favor of a motion stating that it will "oppose the Sunset Junction Street Festival in its current format." What this means for the future of the popular festival is still unknown... LAWeekly.com

Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
