Smith & Pyle (10pm set time) || Listen || Watch
Shawnee Smith and her close friend Missy Pyle, both actresses, met while filming a comedy pilot in 2007. It was during the filming that they began joking about forming their own band. It so happens that fronting a band was one of Pyle’s lifelong fantasies, and before long Pyle had badgered Smith into starting a band. Shawnee Smith as well as being an accomplished actress, is also a gifted musician. The album that has resulted from their collaboration is a splash of roots-oriented, rip roaring country rock called “It’s Okay to Be Happy”. Pop Rock Candy Mountain selected it as one of the “Top Ten albums of 2008”. The band has a revolving cast of great musicians including Chris Goss and Dave Catching (Eagles of Death Metal), Mark Christian (Merle Jagger), Matt Dauzat (Hydrovibe), David Henderson (Hello Reno and Goon Moon), Franz Stahl (Scream and Foo Fighters), Bryan Brown (Sid Brown and Holloys) among others. When they perform Live, the combination of these musicians and Shawnee and Missi’s storytelling charm really bring the songs to life.

NIGHTFUR
"It's hard not to fall for Nightfur's recently-released debut She Lives, what with its winsomely melancholic heart, smarty pants lyrics, and fuzzy 60s psyche pop sound... It's one of those rare albums where you have a difficult -- but pleasant -- time picking your favorite track from its numerous charmers..." -- Radio Free Silverlake
"Nightfur (in their own words) are influenced by “space, girls, and the past.” Rarely has a band described themselves so correctly—She Lives is the result of obsessive study of classic songwriting, combined with a tastefully deployed talent for production. Apart from a clear knack for melody as well as admirable attention to detail, there is an intriguing undercurrent of desolation and menace throughout, adding considerable depth to what would otherwise be fairly straightforward songs. This disparity is put to captivating effect: lush Motown harmonies are layered on top of sinister guitars; a melodic bass line becomes ominous beneath snarling distortion."-- THE DISTRICT WEEKLY, LONG BEACH, CA

America, what a country! The assimilated young New Yorkers in this Gypsy-punk sextet sure think so, jury duty and ESL classes notwithstanding. Previous Golem discs rewired traditional klezmer (raucous Jewish wedding jazz), mainly with vocals in Yiddish. Their fifth disc’s originals, based loosely on Ukrainian immigrant songs collected by singer Annette Ezekiel-Kogan, are in English and just about every tongue spoken East of the Danube, with rock and reggae underpinning whirling dervishes and Old World lover’s laments. The universality comes from carefree comic irony: Ezekiel-Kogan brassily nails a mock citizenship exam (Q: “Can you name the 49th state in the Union?” A: “Al-aaaaa-ska!”) and cosinger Aaron Diskin rhymes kosher and fo’ sure in a song about how much he loves tuches. Pretty soon, the space between exile and arrival starts sounding like a hot spot. - Blender

The Gold Room is an attitude-free oasis of cantilevered-breasted waitresses, cheap drinks, hard men escaping the ball n’ chain (you see no women here except what the hipsters drag in), as well as banda blasting from the juke. Free food is often on the agenda as well, with free peanuts, popcorn, and sometimes even tacos being slung along with your Pacifico.
While all this sounds too good to be true, The Gold Room is actually a well-oiled machine with an interesting and innovative way to deal with gentrification. Everyone is welcome to dine, drink, and make good friends with the friendly regulars, but unwritten bar policy has it that only two small tables of punky invaders is allowed at a time. Sure enough, the second this policy is violated by some messy-haired too-cool-for-school guitar hero, every regular in the joint gets one free sock to the stomach of said interloper. It is a very nice, efficient system for keeping gentrification in check and The Gold Room in the hands of those who need it and love it. – L.A. TACO

Here's some great SXSW stuff I got into today...
The Austin 100: A SXSW Mix
NPR.org - In preparation for the 2009 South by Southwest music festival (March 18-21), NPR Music's spent weeks sampling songs by more than 1,000 of the acts in attendance. Some of the music induced swooning, some of it induced sleepiness, and some of it made us want to pry out our eardrums and swallow them for safe keeping. (We're looking at you, Gaybomb.) Arranged alphabetically by artist, the 100 songs in this ridiculously bountiful — but by no means definitive — mix all passed a simple litmus test, summed up in six simple words: "Yeah, I'd listen to that again." Echo Park Named One of Top 10 Great Neighborhoods

And when you hear that, you might find yourself asking which Realtor came up with that ranking. Luckily, this time there is some creditability behind the designation: the American Planning Association. They "singled out Echo Park because of its breathtaking topography set in the hills above downtown, historic architecture, pedestrian-oriented streets and stairways, and engaged residents who, over the years, have gone to great lengths to protect and preserve their community," according to an APA release (add: their website has more info and history on why EP was chosen) .... more after you click on the image!
